Research shows that 1 in 4 juggle all of that — the writing, the studying, the researching and applying — completely on their own. One approach to make this whole process easier? Pair students up with someone who can help, a mentor or adviser, virtually.

That's the idea behind CollegePoint, an initiative funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Deep Learning Through Transformative Pedagogies

Deep Learning Through Transformative Pedagogies | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Education has far out-stretched its humble beginning that only involved reading, writing and understanding the subjects taught. With changing dynamics, students have evolved from information gatherers to learners looking for practical learning that extends beyond examinations and classrooms. Learning today, breaks the barriers of curriculum, seeping into the nuances of the mind and its effect on the overall development of a student. It takes into consideration, the different kinds of learners, their capabilities and interests, skills and will, to make learning more effective, leading to the emergence of deep learning.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Deep Learning -- Dive in, all the fun is in the deep end. Delighted to find so much of what I believe in captured in a single infographic.

Reminds me of a quotation from the Milken Family Foundation that has guided me for the past 23 years:  The Future Belongs to the Educated.

Rethinking Rereading | Faculty Focus

Rethinking Rereading | Faculty Focus | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
There’s plenty of good research on study strategies that promote learning. It’s also well-documented that students don’t always use them. As most of us are well aware, procrastination gets in the way of learning. Cramming ends up being mostly a shoveling exercise—digging up details and dropping them into short term-memory. But there’s also evidence that students don’t know that some strategies do more for learning than others. And guess what? Neither do some faculty.

Is teaching study skills part of your curriculum?

I wonder how this could be used in corporate. The model works well with Coursera. This is a way to get work products to assess skills without the teacher doing all the grading. I found I learned just as much, if not more, when I did my peer reviews.

Massive Study Finds Lectures Still Dominate STEM Education

Massive Study Finds Lectures Still Dominate STEM Education | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
One potential culprit captured by the study: Faculty may lack the training necessary to take advantage of smaller class sizes, open classroom layouts and other strategies meant to reduce the reliance on conventional lecturing. Lectures did occur less often in smaller than larger classes, the study found, and open layouts did correlate with more student-centered learning. But about half of the courses with those advantages still featured more conventional lecturing than interactive or student-centered teaching styles.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

"Enough with the lectures already!'

Online Learning Journal Releases New Free eBook

Online Learning Journal Releases New Free eBook | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

By  Jill Buban, Ph.D.

"I’m pleased to announce the publication of a free eBook, a collaborative effort between Routledge and the Online Learning Consortium. In the past five years, the Online Learning journal has undergone a name change (formerly the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks), a merger with the Journal for Online Learning and Teaching (JOLT), the flagship publication of the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT), and an expansion of the editorial board, including editor-in-chief Dr. Peter Shea who continues to act in this role. Other members of the editorial board have a broad range of expertise in online, blended, and digital education which brings me to the focus of this eBook. Many of the Online Learning editorial board members are Routledge authors and, when we look at our great Online Learning Consortium (OLC) community of members, volunteers, and friends, we have additional Routledge authors in common."

Excellent publication -- must read for online teachers and administrators!

OER  (Open Educational Resources) are slowing nibbling away at the power of textbook companies.  Now for profit companies are finding ways to add value to their services by providing access to OER resources at no charge.
