The Adjunct’s Lifestyle: The Need for Essential Moments of Unproductivity | Online Teaching Guest Blog | Blog | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
I work an average of 60 hours a week for my normal job (that’s being kind to myself) plus an additional 20 plus hours when I am teaching, and another 20 plus hours a week working on things like my side hustles, writing, researching, and yes looking for my next “opportunity”. Opportunities that are part of the adjunct’s lifestyle include looking or applying for more online teaching gigs, entrepreneurship/passive income ideas, conferences to submit papers to, and anything in general that theoretically will enhance my life. All these opportunities mainly for monetary and/or career enhancement in the hopes of achieving a more “free” and independent lifestyle.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Here's timely advice for those of you striving to make the adjunct lifestyle work.  Mindful moments really can recharge the batteries.

This fall at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (aka the d.school)—where, until recently, I led the K12 Lab—we’re celebrating 10 years of exploring the role that design thinking can play in schools. In that time, we’ve learned a lot about building creative school cultures based on two essential design practices: changing your point of view and prototyping. Below are some of the most effective practices we’ve seen.

Teaching Is Crazy Demanding—So I'm Making These Promises at Home

Teaching Is Crazy Demanding—So I'm Making These Promises at Home | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
With the new school year fast approaching, I can already feel the jarring shift from attentive husband and doting dad to harried English teacher. I know I’ll soon be lost in trying to grade a set of essays, plan a new lesson on subject/verb agreement, prep for club meetings, and cheer on my students in their extracurricular endeavors. Every year I lose track of aspects of family life that have been so wonderful all summer. This year I am trying to make some changes to my teacher work-life balance.

These are the promises I am making to my family this year.

Unlocking the Promise of Digital Assessment

Unlocking the Promise of Digital Assessment | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
For many professors, student assessment is one of the most labor-intensive components of teaching a class. Items must be prepared, rubrics created, and instructions written. The work continues as the tests are scored, papers read, and comments shared. Performing authentic and meaningful student assessment takes time. Consequently, some professors construct relatively few assessments for their courses.

How colleges train instructors to teach online courses | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Despite voluminous online and face-to-face training opportunities, colleges and universities still struggle to get significant numbers of full- and part-time instructors to participate. “Instructors have plenty of stories about how much research they are doing, how many classes they are teaching,” Zotti said.
“The biggest challenge is time, especially when dealing with adjunct faculty,” said Kerr, of Fanshawe College. “If they are teaching online, they are not around” on campus.
