The end goals of humanized online learning are fostered through integrating learners voices, engaging students in the active construction of knowledge, fostering emotional connections, and providing students with choices. You recently launched the DALMOOC, which you created with a focus on improving the social experience of learners – can you tell me a bit about the structure and format you have chosen?

We call it a dual layer MOOC, but we don’t mean that in a binary sense, it’s more like saying there are two pathways to take. You can either take a structured pathway – the way that you see with a lot of MOOCs that are run, say, on Cousera or edX – and that’s a heavy teacher focus with guidance. As in, you click through to the next level.

We’ve created a second level that we’re calling more of the ‘social layer’ and we’re basically asking students to engage with one another and to create artefacts that reflect their understanding and to share those artefacts.

In the learning process we need different cycles of scaffolding – there are times when you come across a new idea completely and you can’t really create and socialise around it effectively because you just don’t know anything. So, there may be a cycle by which the learner follows a traditional structure or pathway but as soon as they become more confident they move into social and more emerging formats. In a way they’re oscillating between these two elements of the MOOC: structure and linear versus emergent and social.

I focused on Siemens design of multiple pathways through a MOOC.  His description of the design as "oscillating between these two elements of the MOOC: structure and linear versus emergent and social." triggers some interest. 


Social engagement in any online class is a precious and memorable experience.

From a conveying useful information perspective, the most popular discussion has 0 value. However, from the perspective of encouraging people to bond and become emotionally invested in the community, it's very useful. 


When members become emotionally invested in the community, their level of activity goes up. When members participate in bonding/status-jockeying discussions, their level of activity goes up. When members get to know each other beyond the topic, their level of activity increases.

These vibrant learning communities sustained artistry and craftsmanship through the dark ages when centers of learning were exclusive and rare. Much like these medieval guilds, professional learning communities (PLCs) provide a new dimension to professional development as educators flock around high-interest needs and topics. By definition, PLCs

Form organically around immediate member needs and interests.
Allow participants to self-select their roles and contributions.
Offer opportunities to enrich and deepen understanding.
Include collaborative inquiry in the learning process.
Provide practice and risk taking in a safe, supportive climate.
Grow, morph, and disband as part of a life cycle.

Abstract

The digitalisation of educational communities has increased rapidly in the last decade. Modern technologies transform the way educational leaders such as teachers, tutors, deans and supervisors view and manage their educational communities. More often, educational leaders offer a variety of gateways, guiding the e-learners in their search for finding and understanding information. A new type of leader is required for understanding the needs and requirements of geographically dispersed e-learners. This calls for a compassioned kind of leader, able to reconcile the dilemma of high-tech versus hi-touch in the online classroom. This article examines servant-leadership and its implications for e-learning in the 24/7 classroom where community building is key.

The role of the teacher in online education is often described as the guide on the side, rather than the sage on the stage. Servant leadership concepts bring nuance and depth to the role of guide or facilitator.


In this article the authors stake out promising new ground for research. "In literature (amongst others Greenleaf, 1977 and 1991; Keith, 2011; Nuijten, 2009; Trompenaars and Voerman, 2009; Sarayrah, 2004; Vargas and Hanlon, 2007 and Spears, 2000) servant-leadership qualities can be found like listening, forgiveness, empathy, humility, care for people and the organization, healing of relationships, awareness, persuasion, courage, giving feedback, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, authenticity, commitment to the growth and empowerment of others and building community. Teachers with some or more of these servant-leadership (high-touch) qualities can make the difference in the e-learning environment. In the (high-tech) online classroom the teacher, more than ever before, needs to be qualified to amongst others listen, care for the e-learners, encourage awareness raising, give feedback and, last but not least, build a vivid learning community. This calls for a compassioned kind of educational leader, able to connect high-tech (technology mediated learning, multimedia infrastructure) opportunities with hi-touch (contact, human interaction, commitment to the growth of others, etc.) opportunities in the online classroom."


The e-learning environments envisioned in this internationally oriented paper describe many of the values driving the University of Wisconsin-Stout's E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate Certificate.

Icebreakers are fun activities that help people get to know each other. These activities can potentially ameliorate the perceived distance in online learning environments. Two author-developed icebreakers were used in a preliminary study involving university undergraduates and instructors in online environments. Respondents took part in an icebreaker at the start of a semester and at the mid-point after which they completed a questionnaire about perceived value of icebreakers. Early results were positive and have led to recommendations for practice.

I'm always looking for good icebreakers. Indeed, I would drop any online class that doesn't strat with an icebreaker. Why? Starting with an icebreaker recognizes the importance of building trust in a learning community. It's a simple way to get to know each other (and have a little low stress practice using the discussion software).  


I know some are uncomfortable with this practice.  Better the few should change their attitudes and lighten up; skipping the icebreaker is a deal breaker for me!
