ISTE | It's time to commit to digital citizenship!

ISTE | It's time to commit to digital citizenship! | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

“Learning to be an effective digital citizen is not something that happens if we don’t actively teach it,” Culatta says. “And preparing a generation of effective digital citizens is the most important thing we can do to ensure our democracy for the future.”

Unfortunately, many educators still mistakenly conflate digital citizenship with online safety. While teaching kids to craft strong passwords and refrain from posting inappropriate pictures online is important, it’s no longer enough. In an era of fake news and increasingly bitter political polarization, it’s time for teachers to move beyond online safety and teach students how to use technology to:

* Make their communities better.
* Respectfully engage with people who have different beliefs.
* Shape and change public policy.
*Assess the validity of online sources of information.

“Digital citizenship, it turns out, is not a list of ‘don’ts’ but a list of ‘dos’,” Culatta says. “And never has it been more important than it is now.”

ISTE 2012 or Bust — The Digital Shift

ISTE 2012 or Bust — The Digital Shift | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Attending ISTE 2012 in San Diego is a no-brainer. I plan to present on the Hollywood Squares panel, which will address recent education and technology research, with some of the same school library and ed-tech rock stars that I was so ecstatic to meet back in 2010. I also look forward to bringing along another classroom teacher to experience ISTE and get inspired by the new ideas it offers. Although I hate missing ALA’s annual conference, attending ISTE and soaking up its unique culture is the most important thing I can do for myself each year as a library media specialist.

The basic cognitive skills needed by previous generations are no longer enough. Students in the conceptual age must also master the higher levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, including creation, metacognition and self-actualization.

“It will require an upgrade to our curriculum, new instructional methods and materials, a new profile of a global graduate and an open mind,” say Smith, Chavez and Seaman.

For ideas about how to re-create your classroom for the conceptual age, including potential classroom setups, blended learning models to mix and match, and a curriculum design process, take a look at the infographic

NETS for Teachers

NETS for Teachers | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

ISTE's NETS for Teachers (NETS•T) are the standards for evaluating the skills and knowledge educators need to teach, work, and learn in an increasingly connected global and digital society.

As technology integration continues to increase in our society, it is paramount that teachers possess the skills and behaviors of digital age professionals.

===> Moving forward, teachers must become comfortable being co-learners with their students and colleagues around the world. <===

If you are a presenter, please be sure to use a variety of media in your presentation. Incorporate a back channel or shared document, use video (edit it to be under 60 seconds - trust me on this one), and leave time for questions. Know your material and be sure there is at least one big takeaway related to your session description. Also, look at your slide deck and think about revamping the slides. Keep in mind that further information, resources and materials can be included on a website that you clearly post on your slides (in a shortened URL).

Information Fluency in the Classroom: Evaluation and Critical Thinking

Information Fluency in the Classroom: Evaluation and Critical Thinking | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

I will be presenting along with Dr. Carl Heine of IMSA on Monday, 6/25/2012, 11:00am–12:00pm, SDCC 2.  If you are attending ISTE 2012, please join us! ~ Dennis

This session demonstrates effective information fluency instruction using free modules from 21st Century Information Fluency (http://21cif.com). The focus is on areas of critical weakness: searching for the "right" database, evaluating the credibility of information using information about authorship, date and external references.
