Google+ Hangouts in Online Education: A Capable, Low-Cost Solution by Rebecca Bodrero : Learning Solutions Magazine

Google+ Hangouts in Online Education: A Capable, Low-Cost Solution by Rebecca Bodrero : Learning Solutions Magazine | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

“Effective use of any tool is most typically the result of how it is used, not the fact that it is used. Procedural and logistical aspects should be part of planning for use of a tool such as Hangouts. For example, it’s common knowledge that in-person meetings and small group activities are more likely to be effective when facilitated and driven by purpose. The same principle applies to video conferencing.”

It may not seem like it, but it's been less than 90 days since Google+ was introduced to the world. Since then, we've seen many great features that have made Google+ one of the most attractive social networks around.

You can hangout on your mobile phone. They're available for phones with front-facing cameras and Android 2.3 and up. (iOS users, don't fret - support is on the way.) To find a hangout on your phone, go through your Stream and click on "Join hangout" to participate in the hangout.

Screen-Sharing Comes To Google+ Hangouts

Screen-Sharing Comes To Google+ Hangouts | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

If you were waiting for Google to release a screen-sharing feature inside the Hangout real-time collaboration platform, that time has come.

In the next 48 hours Google will be rolling out to all Google+ users the ability to screen-share during any hangout session.

From Christopher Johnson G+ post: "When we launched Hangouts with Extras last September, we wanted to test new features and get feedback from users.

We’ve learned a lot over the past few months, and today we’re rolling out a new Hangouts look and feel that incorporates some of the “extras,” and better reflects Google’s overall design ( http://goo.gl/gG1NA ).

Highlights include:

- Screensharing: share what’s on your computer screen with everyone in the hangout. This is the first of many extras we’re graduating to Hangouts proper.

- Bigger video: we’ve put more emphasis on the live video itself by optimizing white space and other screen elements."

Google+ Hangouts Now Offer Free Voice Calls

Google+ Hangouts Now Offer Free Voice Calls | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
Google+ is rolling out a feature that allows its users to make free conference calls within Hangouts.

That said, you no longer need a Google account or even a computer to join the conversation. A Hangout group can now call in anyone with a phone to listen in. This could not only lure more people to Google+ and grow its user base, but also has potential to revolutionize the way both party lines and conference calls are conducted — from holding meetings to making plans with friends and family.

How Educators and Schools Can Make the Most of Google Hangouts

How Educators and Schools Can Make the Most of Google Hangouts | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
What Is a "Hangout?"

A Hangout is a web-based tool created by Google for communicating through video.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I've been using Hangouts for sometime.  I like the technology, but question the ROI of using it in asynchronous online course. My students just can't manage to get to one place at the same time. They are used to timing their learning to their own clocks.

I do find the real time connections powerful.  My teachers's sense tells me it comforts and motivates my students to connect in real time (those that show up at least).

I've used Skype, but they don't offer a free video conference room for 9 people like Hangouts.

I also like that I can record my hangouts live and my archive will be saved to my Youtube account.  I've even used this feature as a way to create web video.

These tools are free, powerful, and fun to use.

50 Ways Schools Can Use Google+ Hangouts | Edudemic

50 Ways Schools Can Use Google+ Hangouts | Edudemic | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

At its core, Google+ Hangouts is simply a souped-up version of video chat. But when it comes to education, it’s so much more than that. It becomes a vehicle for learning, sharing, collaboration, and ideas.

A Real-Time Transcription App for Google Hangouts: Hangout Captions

A Real-Time Transcription App for Google Hangouts: Hangout Captions | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Hangout Captions is a new experimental app for Google Hangouts that allows you to add a real-time text transcription of what is being said inside the Hangout.

The text transcription is displayed next to the event allowing deaf or hearing-impaired participants to read and understand fully the topic being discussed.

"“By adding the +Hangout Captions app, you can either connect live text from a professional transcriptionist to your Hangout, or type right into a text box yourself to transcribe a Hangout for your friends,” Naomi Black, technical program manager for accessibility engineering wrote in a post on Google+."

"You’ll only be able to see a transcription in the Hangout Captions side panel when someone in the Hangout is providing the transcription; either through live stenography (CART or palantype) or by simply typing into the app. Live transcription isn’t automatic."

(Source: http://mashable.com/2012/07/05/google-hangout-caption/)

"Hangout Captions is an app that connects live transcription services directly into a Google+ Hangout, improving accessibility for participants who are deaf or hard of hearing."

P:S.: In late May, Google added the ability to add captions to videos uploaded to Google+.

How are Educators Using Google Plus Hangouts? | MindShift | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

As a Skype user,  I've found video conferencing with my students to be an effective connection.  I'm intrigued by the idea of larger hangout meetings with my online students.  I'll be trying this! ~ Dennis

Google Hangouts opens up another realm of possibilities for educators

.

Google Hangouts allows up to 10 people to video chat with one another. Hangouts are free and easy to use (once you download and install a browser plug-in, you’re all set). You can invite specific people to join a Hangout with you, although it’s worth noting that anyone who joins can in turn share the Hangout’s URL and invite others. As being in a Hangout appears in all the participants’ Streams, it does mean that these are public gatherings.

Google’s Hangout technology recognizes who is speaking during a session and that person’s image takes the “big screen” while other participants appear in small tiles below. In other words, there’s no squinting or tracking to try to figure out where the voice in the video conference is coming from.
