In Search of the Killer Mobile App, Part 1: Will LMS Vendors Lead the Way for Higher Ed? - Eduventures | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
By Jeff Alderson, Principal Analyst

Think of the last time you told a coworker about an app, one you recommended that they download right away. Was it education related? Did it specifically target higher education users? We’re going to go out on a limb and assume that it didn’t, because—from where we sit—the “must-have” app for higher ed doesn’t exist yet.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I've worked with more Learning Management Systems than most. I've touch everything on this list. Most of what I need is there, although more often than not some central authority hasn't flipped the switches I need to get to the tools I'd use.

As far as killer apps, mobile is essential.  If an LMS isn't fully functional on a tablet, it's a lame duck.

No Old School for You! Google Classroom-Catch up on the new tools | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

Posted by Will Phan, Google Classroom Software Engineer

As you gear up for the new school year, try the newest features in Google Classroom for more ways to save time, engage your students and keep everyone organized.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Remember the old School?  Google will give you a free 'new-school' with the usual strings attached. (Nothing is free folks).

Google classroom is still relatively primitive compared to open source power house programs like Moodle. Let's hope market competition gets the both paid and open source providers to step up their game.

Still if you are already a Google School, you need to be up on the newest changes.

Haiku Learning revolves around your content. Create classroom pages, add and organize content blocks, change layouts, and publish whenever you’re ready. Embed content from YouTube, Google Docs, Maps, Skype and dozens of other third-party services or create your own from scratch. And when you’ve crafted the perfect classroom page? Resource sharing in Haiku lets you share your classes, pages, and content blocks with any other Haiku user--and use content in your own class created by other teachers.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

I'm glad to see that Haiku is still in the game.  I had a sample account with them years ago and was impressed.  Well worth a look if you are shopping learning management systems.

Getting to know an LMS is different from becoming adept at using a single computing device or other technology tool, partly because management systems are meant to do so many different tasks, as Ms. Weetman and her colleagues in the 170,000-student suburban Atlanta district have come to understand.
Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Professional Development and training are essential when rolling out an Learning Management System (AKA Course Management System).

In my experience, relying on the company providing an LMS for professional development is a first of many steps needed to mastering the complexities of any LMS>

Moodle has several advantages over other LMSs, here’s the list of a few:<br><br>It is an open source learning platform.Users can share changes with the Moodle community for others to use for free. All this leads to the extension and reformation of the software.<br>It makes use of simple technologies, as a result of which its developers are easy to find.<br>It is built on some of the most reliable technologies, such as PHP, MySQL, Apache.<br>It has a fully cooperative development model which offers constant scope for improvement by allowing many high quality contributions to acquire new modules, features and enhancements.<br>It makes use of the more advanced programming approach, the object-oriented programming which makes its functionality all the more efficient and allows users to proceed at their own pace, as well as customize it according to their needs.

Blackboard / Moodle / Brightspace (D2L) Insight on LMS buying | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it
This month, Eduventures released our comprehensive report on Learning Management Systems (LMS). In writing this Deep Dive on the most discussed segment of the education technology market, we wanted to go beyond simply reviewing shifts in market share to shed some light on why so many institutions have been switching vendors. In order to do this, we reviewed over 20 different LMS platforms and met with the vendors to gain insight into their product roadmaps and ask some tough questions about why they are winning (and losing) clients.

Moodle Rubric Grading - Complete Guide - Super Moodle

Moodle Rubric Grading - Complete Guide - Super Moodle | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

The Moodle rubric, a system built for criteria-based assessment, explicitly describes the performance expectation for an assignment. The rubrics have several criteria and each criterion has several descriptive levels provided. A rubric identifies several attributes. They include descriptions, performance levels and the criteria.

Criteria take into account the performance aspects that an instructor intends to assess. The description attribute denotes the desired characteristics associated with a criterion. The performance level is a rating scale in rubric used to identify the level of mastery a student has within a given criteria. Each descriptive level has a numerical grade and an instructor can choose the level that answers a given criterion in the best way possible.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Moodle is always evolving.  One of the strengths of this open source giant is the depth of user community resources.  The Rubric system helps you build grading criteria that will help your online students hit the target.

Progress Tracking in Desire2Learn 10.3 : The Newer, Better Checklists

Progress Tracking in Desire2Learn 10.3 : The Newer, Better Checklists | E-Learning, Instructional Design, and Online Teaching | Scoop.it

by Alex Joppie: Progress tracking turns your Content area into a checklist for students. Every item in your Content can be something that students can check off as they complete it, or something that’s automatically checked when the student does something in D2L, like submit to a dropbox folder or complete a quiz attempt. This is what it looks like for a student.

Dennis T OConnor's insight:

Like Joppie, I've been slow roasted by many D2L upgrade issues For this very reason. I appreciate his upbeat on new Student Progress tracking features in D2L 10.3.

The promise of a non redundant checklist has my attention. If checklists are drawn from the course contents, instructors will be free of the tedious task of creating and updating a separate set of checklists.

Sounds good to me. Let's hope the feature works as promised!
