How To Make Students Better Online Researchers

How To Make Students Better Online Researchers | SoHo Library | Scoop.it

Getting kids to really focus on what exactly they are searching for, and then be able to further distill idea into a few key specific search terms is a skill that we must teach students, and we have to do it over and over again. We never question the vital importance of teaching literacy, but we have to be mindful that there are many kinds of “literacies”. An ever more important one that ALL teachers need to be aware of is digital literacy.

Teacher librarians could soon be left on the funding shelf

Teacher librarians could soon be left on the funding shelf | SoHo Library | Scoop.it

The library is the heart of the primary school, and it is the teacher librarian who brings it alive.

Yet a slow erosion of this position is under way and a permanent loss of such a fundamental person in our primary schools would have devastating consequences in the lives of our children. Originally a full-time position, regardless of the size the school, the days worked by teacher librarians are now dictated by the number of students.

Karen Bonanno's curator insight, December 14, 2012 7:06 PM

This parent states, "So in this age of information at out fingertips, parents have one more important skill to teach their kids: how to be discerning".

My insight is that not all parents would be in a position to be able to teach their child this skill. Having access to a teacher librarian certainly would help to support the parents in this worthy endeavour.

Elizabeth Hutchinson's curator insight, December 15, 2012 4:06 AM
Elizabeth Hutchinson's comment, Today, 9:03 AMI agree but do parents or teachers realise that school librarians have these skills and are able to teach them? I wish more people understood our skills!
BookChook's curator insight, December 15, 2012 3:26 PM

Visual literacy is an important component of digital literacy - and teaching kids to be discerning about what they do online is one of the most important skills of all.

Principals value their librarians. They also want them to be more visible leaders.

Those are just two of the interesting findings from a recent survey of 102 media specialists and 67 principals. In fact, 90 percent of the administrators that we surveyed think we have a positive impact in schools—and a large number also feel that our jobs are important.
