Mississippi Expands Private School Funding for Dyslexia @lawrenceschool @cdcowen | Dyslexia and Early Literacy Success for All Students | Scoop.it
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi is expanding a program that lets students with dyslexia receive state money to attend private schools.

Republican Gov. Phil Bryant signed House Bill 1046 on April 13, and it becomes law July 1.

Until now, students could only receive state money through sixth grade to attend a handful of state-accredited special private schools for children with learning disabilities.

The new law will expand the availability of state money through 12th grade.

The Mississippi Department of Education says 160 children statewide currently receive the aid.

In OH families are fortunate to have a similar program named after the Representative that introduced the legislation: The John Peterson Special Needs Scholarship. Ohio provides about 4,000 scholarships to students ranging from $7,100 to $27,000 depending of the classification on the IEP. This is another great reason to live in NE OH! -Lou

The increase in annual gain corresponds to a 33% improvement in the rate of learning for the period. The study evaluated the effect of just listening (i.e., no paired text).

Why How Many Minutes of Teaching Something Isn't the First Thing to Ask of Research

Why How Many Minutes of Teaching Something Isn't the First Thing to Ask of Research | Dyslexia and Early Literacy Success for All Students | Scoop.it
Question: I am now director of literacy in my district. I am advocating for interactive read alouds, shared reading, guided reading, and similar activities in our primary grades (K-3). Is there a research base that would allow me to determine how many minutes of these activities I should prescribe? Could you provide me with a copy of that research? Shanahan's response: Yikes, Madam, I suspect that your cart has gotten before your horse.

Fixing the Failure Model

Fixing the Failure Model | Dyslexia and Early Literacy Success for All Students | Scoop.it
Are we looking for dyslexia too late? Ongoing research at Boston Children’s Hospital shows that brain imaging and a child’s family history of dyslexia, among a multifaceted array of other factors, can point to a predisposition for dyslexia well before that child ever steps foot in a kindergarten classroom. For schools and parents, this opens the possibility that struggling readers could receive interventions from the very start of their educational careers, offering them a better chance to succeed as learners and readers.
