Buyers Guide to Pigments

Pigment raw materials are much sought after by industries today. Applications of pigment industries in India are span across a broad range of industries like ceramics, paper and pulp, plastics, glass and biomedicine. To get the correct illustration, impression index and color strength of the pigment, it is important to select the right pigment for the substrate. This requires an in-depth knowledge of the pigments. Discussed following are the pigment selection parameters, pigment selection checklist and buying tips for pigments.

Pigment Selection Parameters: The most pivotal factor while selecting a pigment is to know about the application of pigment. Choices of pigments vary with application. A pigment appropriate for plastic coating may or may not fit the glass paint coating.  Apart from application, parameters like tinctorial strength, color, melting points of substrates, etc are some of the crucial parameters which form the decisive factors in selection of Pigments. Selection of Dyes and Pigments is crucial to any industry and needs rich expertise.

Pigment Selection Checklist: You can often decide upon a basic checklist to streamline your selection process. The same has been done for the selection of pigments. This checklist includes focusing on following points:

Type of end-use application of pigmentBarrier properties of substrateNature of resin on which pigment is appliedThe degree of exactness in color requiredThe degree of life-expectancy required Processing temperature to which pigment would be exposed toGuidelines formulated by regulatory and legislative bodies on usage of pigmentsEconomic limitation/Business constraint

Buying Tips for Pigments: Buying tips of pigments are application-specific. Like in case of plastics, exact match to the expected color is required; thus dyes and pigments should be bought accordingly. In general, the substrate to which pigment is being applied should be studied before buying the pigment. Also, the longevity of organic pigments with respect to concerned resin is a matter of concern while buying a pigment.

Understanding the basics about organic pigments

Pigment Industries IndiaPigments have come way beyond what they used to be at one point of time. Today the dynamics of their application have increased manifolds. This is especially true for something as new as organic pigment. There aren’t any industries really which are not using an extensive variety in organic pigments. Various big labels like the Indian Chemical Industries are using these pigments for long-lasting applications. Mostly containing carbon, these pigments come with low toxic levels, thus making them an apt choice to support the green cause too. Even though they are chemically synthesized, pigment industries in India are using them by and large for better results.
Wondering what makes them so popular? The reasons begin with them being consistent and completely non-toxic. This is a major concern today for most companies working with pigments and dyes. Organic pigments were initially used only as mass colorants but their functions and advantages definitely go beyond that. With great tintorial strength, they also bring out the best in your colour combinations. Organic pigments are increasingly being used in applications ranging from opto-electronic displays to photo-reprographics. When you want consistency with unique shades, organic pigments are the options to explore.
Organic pigments are mostly used for applications that are hi-tech in nature. Because they have excellent stability to heat, solvents and weathering, they are popular across various sections of buyers. They not only produce rich colours and bring out the best in textures. If there’s a product in the market with impeccable refractive index, it’s organic pigments. Although it is true that they contain some levels of inorganic materials to stabilise their properties, yet they are much less toxic than other options.
With all the advantages organic pigments come with, inorganic options also have their pros. Having said that, it is always advisable to use options that are less harmful to the environment and are also healthy and safer to use.

Discerning the difference between Dyes and Pigments

Since ages dyes and pigments have been used to adorn various human creations, from clothes to the tall buildings. The naturally occurring dyes and pigments still being in use, with the changing era, synthetically produced dyes and pigments are used largely. The use of these in our daily life are all produced by the Pigment Industries Of India.

Although both are used as a coloring agent, it is hard to tell the difference between them. Hence, the Pigment Companies of India extricate between the two:

Dyes being resolvable in water, one has to inject a substance in the water, in order to marinate the color. A dye is said to be colorfast if the material is able to retain the color after the wash. Dyes are to be used in textiles, food, leather, polishes, lubricating oils and much more.Pigments need to be ground in to dust and blended with a dispersing agent. The agent is then escalated on the material to be colored. As the dispersing agent is exhausted, the color is retained. The agent, commonly known as Pigment Dispersion can be water or solvent based. Pigments are used in paints, printing inks, textiles such as nylon, polyester, cement paints, paper, cosmetics and much more.

After having to understand the difference between both of them, if you are still wondering about their application, you can try to find out by yourself by applying paints on the paper, as follows:

When you apply pigments on the top of a paper, without being enslaved, its particles get fastened to the paper, thereby making a bond between the pigment particles and the paper fibres. These appear to be a coating on the top of the paper.Dyes are made in a way to cause chemical bond on the paper. There are also dyes available today which uses acid to merge with the fabrics. After this, they become a part of the material.

The uses of pigments and dyes vary individually, as follows:

An artist’s paints, oil paints or water colors are made from pigments. The dyes are used in making alcohol inks, permanent markers and stamp pads.

Thus, you must need to know the difference between dyes and pigments to select the apt treatment during construction, which can thus avoid faults.

Buyers Guide to Dyes

Ici Dyes's insight:

Dyeing a substrate is a critical process. The industries which make use of dye demand reliable and cost-effective dyeing processes. This can be ensure by using the right tools and correct methodologies while dyeing. Furthermore, there is a high pressure from legislative and regulatory bodies to produce only environmental friendly dyes. Thus, a lot of factors are to be considered while dyeing a substrate. To understand this, we need to know about dyeing pre-requisites, common dyeing problems and right first time dyeing.

Dyeing pre-requisites: There are certain dyeing pre-requisites that the dye manager must be completely ware of before the dyeing process is initiated. These are the parameters that should be checked for before every dyeing cycle. Like, it is necessary to ensure that the dye opted for is compatible with substrate and its physical features like temperature and pH.  Non-seriousness towards these parameters could lead to erroneous dyeing results. Dyes and pigments are critical colorants and require precise methodologies for their application.

Common Dyeing Problems: Unstable dispersion of dye, pale areas post dyeing, incorrect dyeing and precipitates presence in dyebath are the most common dyeing problems faced by dyers. There are specific solutions to each of these problems. A systematic approach to dyeing would minimize 99% of the dyeing problems.

Right First Time Dyeing: Right first time dyeing is a common terminology used in process of dyeing. It refers to coloring the substrate with the correct shade in the first time without having repetitive cycles of re-coloring. Usually, the correct shade is not achieved in the first cycle of the dyeing and washing-off and re-shading techniques are employed to get the right shade. This can be evaded by using Right first time dyeing process. It offers numerous benefits like cost and time savings, less waste-production and reduction in pollution. This process is has been adopted by numerous Pigment companies in India.

What makes dyes and pigments different?

They both have their own benefits and are both extremely important to the world of colorants and pigment industries in India. This is what makes dyes and pigments an essential concept to understand. Even as many think they are pretty much the same thing. They are so not! When you talk about dyes, they are used primarily for surface coating, more so in printing industries that require excellent levels of transparency to produce coloured metal foils and films. They are also used to produce flamboyant finishes, especially at any pigment company in India.  Of late their use has also been largely seen in wood stains including many other applications. What’s interesting is the way technology has made the use of dyes very comfortable in specific automotive finishes. All thanks to their transparency properties and colour quality.

More than just that, there are a variety of solvents available today that make dyes extremely interesting to use. The main difference between dyes and pigment comes in context to their chemical properties. To understand this, it’s important to know what functions differ for the two. Coming to pigments the concept is quite interesting. In simple terms, they are fine insoluble solid material which can either be black, white or coloured. This material basically improves the overall appearance or gives colour to any medium where it is used.

Although dyes and pigments come from the same building blocks, they vary in the basic fact that while dyes are easily soluble in media you incorporate them in, it’s not so for pigments. And then you have pigments on one hand that are always mix with the medium on a physical level, the case is different with dyes.

Be it pigment or dyes, they have their own contributions to make in making the colours brighter and more interesting to look at. Their chemical variations make the two different, yet both are equally significant in enhancing picture quality.
