Free in France does not offer device subsidies, and sells voice and data very cheaply. It has set off the telcos price war in France, lowering its operating costs by encouraging consumers to offload onto its 4mn hotspot WiFi network. 

 

The new batch of MVNOs launching in the USA, confirm the size of the tariff price gap between incumbant providers who subsidise handsets and agile MVNOs who do not. 

 

Eventually consumers will realise that the high cost of tariffs is not due to the voice/sms/data, but the cost of the device.

According to research house Informa Telecoms & Media, there will not be a uniform decline in mobile operators’ SMS traffic and revenues as a result of the adoption and use of over-the-top messaging services.

 

Globally, Informa forecasts that SMS traffic will total 9.4 trillion messages by 2016, up from 5.9 trillion messages in 2011. However, SMS’s share of global mobile messaging traffic will fall from 64.1 per cent in 2011, to 42.1 per cent in 2016.
