Literary Criticism

Literary Criticism | Duality | Scoop.it
Sarah Caouette's insight:

This literary analysis of Moby Dick opens up readers eyes to how duality can be used in different ways in all different types of literature. Duality can be used not only in the plot of a story, but also can be utilized in characters. After reviewing this article, it makes the reader realize that duality is present everywhere. It may even be seen in the actual book itself, not just in the text. When reading in the future, I will be more aware of the archetype duality and the important role it plays in creating an interesting story.

White House-Black Market (TV Commercial)

Commerical for clothing store, White House-Black Market, which debuted in 2012.

Sarah Caouette's insight:

This TV commercial is for a clothing company known as White House-Black Market. This commercial represents the archetype of duality because of the contrasting white and black colors. The white and black are symbolic of duality because they are the two colors that make up the yin yang symbol. Also, the white and black contrast greatly in the commercial and are also opposites, two indicators of the archetype duality. This enhances the clothing that the company is promoting by making all the outfits stand out and making the outfits look much bolder against the simple background.

Frog and Toad Are Friends By: Arnold Lobel (Children's Book)

Frog and Toad Are Friends By: Arnold Lobel (Children's Book) | Duality | Scoop.it

This classic children's book, written in 1979, recounts the adventures of two best friends, Frog and Toad.

Sarah Caouette's insight:

In Frog and Toad Are Friends, author Arnold Lobel writes of two friends and their adventures in a series of short stories. The two friends, Frog and Toad, are very different. But even though their personalities vary so greatly, they are still best friends. This is because they care for one another and express their friendship through acts of kindness and unselfishness. This connects to the archetype, duality because the two main characters are opposites but complement each other at the same time. Both of these aspects are also aspects of duality and is how this archetype is expressed in the children's book Frog and Toad Are Friends.

Duality- Renee Wildes (Fictional Text)

Duality- Renee Wildes (Fictional Text) | Duality | Scoop.it
Sarah Caouette's insight:

The novel Duality captures the true meaning of what the archetype duality is. The main character Khan Androcles is caught living two different lives intertwined into one. She has hid her half-dragon mage fighting skills behind a public persona as a healer ever since her childhood. This goes on until her secret skills are needed to help keep the safe hold secure. Among the multiple twists and turns in the novel, the archetype of duality is present throughout. The archetype is mainly seen in Khan and symbolizes her two contrasting lives.

Disney's Mulan - Reflection (Song)

The full version of "Reflection" from Disney's Mulan sung by Christina Aguilera.

Sarah Caouette's insight:

The following music video is from the animated Disney movie, Mulan. The archetype duality can be seen in the music video “Reflection” specifically in the moment when Mulan is facing the mirror and begins to wipe off her makeup. Her face is half what she normally looks like and half of what her society thinks she should look like. These two appearances contrast and are opposites and therefore represent duality. Also, when looking at the image, I immediately connected her makeup to the yin yang symbol, which is another indicator of Duality. This is because, in the image you can see the contrasting dark and white on her face. Duality is clearly used in this music video to increase the artistic aspect of the video and also to increase the artistic effect.

Duality - by Deb Kirkeeide (Image)

Duality - by Deb Kirkeeide (Image) | Duality | Scoop.it

Oil painting on canvas painted by Deb Kirkeeide in 2009.

Sarah Caouette's insight:

The idea of the archetype duality is present throughout this painting by Deb Kirkeeide. From the color of the birds to the background, the presence of duality is obvious. Duality shapes the message of this image by showing that there is both positive and negative aspects in the world espically in nature.  The color choices made by the artist help to illustrate duality. The image also captures the balance between these positive and negative aspects in life and how they come together to form one.
