Drugs warning after 17-year-old girl dies after taking 'Mortal Combat' tablets in nightclub, Scotland | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it
Four others were admitted to hospitals in Glasgow and Ayrshire after taking pills known as Mortal Kombats.
Julian Buchanan's insight:

Hard to know what the cause of death is - but with prohibition nobody knows what they are taking, and they must buy from underground dealers. And to think the UK Daily Express are seeking to undermine (Welsh) govt attempts to introduce drug testing kits!

How the Myth of the ‘Negro Cocaine Fiend’ Helped Shape American Drug Policy

How the Myth of the ‘Negro Cocaine Fiend’ Helped Shape American Drug Policy | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it
In 1914, a racist fiction helped sell one of the nation’s first drug laws; 100 years later, it’s still with us.
Julian Buchanan's insight:

Drug laws are not based upon science or evidence - they are rooted in racism, fear, self interest and ignorance.

Five legal highs pulled off the NZ shelves - (on what evidence?)

Five legal highs pulled off the NZ shelves - (on what evidence?) | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it
Some of the first legal highs to be sold under licence in New Zealand have been urgently pulled off shelves after users reported adverse health effects. - New Zealand Herald
Julian Buchanan's insight:

NZ Retailers told to remove Legal Highs (Anarchy, Karma, Voodoo, Northern Lights Primo, AK47) immediately or face potential confiscation by law enforcement. Is scientific evidence informing this decision or is it propaganda driven drug policy? No indication of evidence that's prompted the recall. Retailers informed by the news media not the Ministry of Health.

Will the NZ govt go further and place these 5 legal highs on the MDA 1975 ... extending the net of prohibition?

I've had doubts all along about the real motivation and implications of this much hailed progressive NZ approach to legal highs

Caffeine pill 'could boost memory'

Caffeine pill 'could boost memory' | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it

A US study has raised the possibility that we may one day rely on caffeine to boost memory as well as to wake up. The research, published in Nature Neuroscience, tested the memories of 160 people over 24 hours. It found those who took caffeine tablets, rather than dummy pills, fared better on the memory tests.

Julian Buchanan's insight:

Funny how research on legal drugs can explore the positive benefits whereas research on illegal drugs is confined to examining negative consequences.

I wonder if this will result in a cry for banning the drug in examinations and a role of out exam drug testing ... in the same crazy way it we have responded to illegal drugs? I'm sure it wont. And wish it didn't for illegal drugs.

Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs - Response to "Death by Cannabis"

Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs - Response to "Death by Cannabis" | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it

The question of whether cannabis killed one individual may be significant for the family concerned but it is not useful for exploring the essential scientific, political and personal questions about each drug’s capacity to injure and kill. To answer that, you need data from thousands of people, to distinguish harm from freak events. Coincidentally, buried on page 20 of the same edition of the Metro, three lines of text allude to a new study on alcohol that provides a striking example from a study of 151,000 people. It found that one in four Russian men are dead before they reach 55, most of them killed by alcohol.

ARTICLE: Student Drug Testing vs Positive School Climates: Longitudinal Study on Impact of drug behaviour

ARTICLE: Student Drug Testing vs Positive School Climates: Longitudinal Study on Impact of drug behaviour | Drugs, Society, Human Rights & Justice | Scoop.it

Conclusions: Student drug testing appears to be less associated with substance use than positive school climates. Nevertheless, even favorable school climates may not be able to influence the use of alcohol, which appears to be quite normative in this age group. (J. Stud. Alcohol Drugs, 75, 65–73, 2014)

Julian Buchanan's insight:

Drug Testing Students  - a good example of policy led research ... that is, there was no evidence to support drug testing of students the policy was not research led -it was policy led (probably to appease a punitive populist political agenda). Now having implemented the drug testing approach (lucrative business btw) research is done to try to support it.

Existing research and practice wisdom would indicate it was not a scheme worth exploring in the first place.
