Drones Must Be Banned from Airline Flightpaths

Reid Morrison's curator insight, November 28, 2014 4:31 PM

The recent massive increase in the number of personal drones owned in the United States is already starting to cause problems with commercial and military flights. As the popular media article says, drones can be owned by anyone and can under current regulations be flown almost anywhere under 400ft as long as they are not too close to an airport. Small drones have recently had multiple close calls with collisions involving much larger, normally commercial, aircraft. The article is written to bring light to the rising problem of uncontrolled personal drone use. The sheer number of private drones in use could be a very effective tool for destruction if able to be controlled by a single group or source. A swarm of small drones would be a very difficult force to stop, which is why the use of private drones in the United States has brought many potential dangers along with it. The powerful ability that drones have when they work together was best shown in the TED talk video where the quad-copters work together to catch the ball in the net and throw it back to the presenter.
