A look into what may be coming to the K-12 classroom in the next few years. Some of these technologies are already in use in many places.

Erin Ryan's curator insight, October 22, 2015 6:14 PM

The students of tomorrow will demand the curriculum of tomorrow. This statement engulfs the idea that education has to change with the times. What used to work, no longer does. We have to make some aggressive changes to education in order to support students in developing the skills that employers expect. I am privileged to work for  district that has many of these new technologies in place. There is a definite awareness in education that our instruction and pedagogies need to be adjusted or revamped to fit our learners needs. The constant news flashes are not new and we are on it folks!

25 states now require computer science for high school graduation - Education Dive | Dr DD's Tech Scoops | Scoop.it

"As computer science skills like coding become increasingly relevant in the job market, a number of states and districts are making moves to set students up for success.

Today, 25 states require students to take a computer science course in order to graduate from high school — more than double the number with such a requirement in 2013.

Additionally, a large number of districts are weaving coding instruction into early learning curriculum, impacting students as young as kindergarten. "

Check this out: The Kalamazoo Promise: In kalamazoo, public schools children who attend and  graduate can have college paid for! Why can't the Kalamazoo promise be the USA Promise?? Just sayin'--Lou

Excerpt:

Kalamazoo is  the nation's premier laboratory for investing in children as a means of economic development and creating a K-16 system of free public education, said Janice Brown, executive director of The Kalamazoo Promise.

So far, so good, Brown says.

It was Brown, then superintendent of Kalamazoo Public Schools, who launched The Promise in November 2005. Funded by anonymous donors, the programs provides college scholarships to all KPS graduates who have lived in the district and attended KPS through at least high school and attend a Michigan public college.

Starting with the Class of 2006, 91 percent of Promise-eligible students -- including those from alternative education programs -- have enrolled in at least one semester of college, an astonishing statistic in a high-poverty, majority-minority school district.....

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: Nearly 60% of Teens Use Their Own Mobile Devices in School for Learning

Lisa Nielsen: The Innovative Educator: Nearly 60% of Teens Use Their Own Mobile Devices in School for Learning | Dr DD's Tech Scoops | Scoop.it

This year’s report, Digital Learning 24/7: Understanding Technology – Enhanced Learning in the Lives of Today’s Students, provides landmark findings on the efficacy and value associated with popular digital learning initiatives: blended learning, online learning, school-assigned mobile devices and STEM learning.  The views, values and experiences of students taking part in these digital learning initiatives are compared with students in more traditional classroom-based education.
“We hope by highlighting the views and values of today’s students, especially those students who are living a digital learning experience, this year’s report stimulates new discussions around the effective use of digital tools, resources and content to support student learning,” said Julie Evans CEO of Project Tomorrow.

This is a game changer. As we look into all we will want to do with a device for our 1:1 initiative, being able to screencast was a priority. Student being able to demonstrate mastery by teaching others a specific skill online is essential to our technology platform. This helps tip the scale a bit toward the ChromeBook side.
