Music Business All Nighters Are Hazardous To Your Health | Gerard Spinks UndagroundMilli

Over the years, I’ve spent countless time with music industry artists who have all taken on one fatal quality: not sleeping much. I know and have heard many artists talk about not sleeping and it’s gotten to the point where they are almost bragging about how cool it is not to sleep.

As other formats have come and gone, a small but devoted audience has kept the LP alive. (Are vinyl records making a comeback? Perhaps a very slow one. Encouraging for the music industry nonetheless. http://tiny.cc/v51wx)

Southbay Electronic Musik Festival | Opium Scent Music

Southbay Electronic Musik Festival | Opium Scent Music | Downtempo Trip Hop Electronic Music | Scoop.it
Description:

The centerpiece of Johnny V’s eighth anniversary celebration, the Electronic Musik Festival features almost two dozen DJs in areas dedicated to specific styles. Make Sense Muzik’s Scott Rich booked a house/techno line-up headlined by DJ M3 (aka Manny), a San Jose native who was hugely influential in shaping the Bay Area house scene throughout the 1990s and soon found himself spinning at clubs around the world.

Also featured are San Jose’s Lucas Rodenbush, better known as E.B.E., an electronic music pioneer whose music held its own next to John Digweed’s in the movie Groove; Sunnyvale’s Paul Leath, Arturo Garces, the manager of Chris Jackson’s San Jose house imprint Jump Recordings; and Rich himself.

The downtempo/hip hop/ambient/glitch area features headliner Tape Mastah Steph, who made his name creating beats for the groundbreaking underground San Jose crew Subcontents. Also performing is the Christopher Leath, brother of Paul and the other half of their partnership “Leathal DJs;” DJ Sparkle and two glitch DJs, De Nada and Joint Effort (Stephen Nicholas).

For the dubstep/jungle area, Rich enlisted the know-how of ubiquitous South Bay DJ Andrew Moyco, aka Audio Dru, who booked Santa Cruz’s Dub Pirates, Oakland’s Mr. Kitt, who’s part of the Helicopter Showdown crew, and local DJs like HAK (who has been spinning since the days of the Cactus Club), TKO, Dubstantial, Wrek-One, Smizzle, Anigmal and Audio Dru himself.

The Art of Pre-Production: Band Recording #tips

The Art of Pre-Production: Band Recording #tips | Downtempo Trip Hop Electronic Music | Scoop.it
So you have access to a nice recording space, you know you will have enough I/O for the project, and you have secured enough time to fully record it.

For some people, this is enough. They go blind into a project and whatever happens, they make it work. This tends to be the route of super professionals or arrogant posers. There are several steps that I take to make sure that sessions will not only run smoothly, but are recoverable from disaster.....

"Superior Music Through Collective Consciousness"-Joint Effort 2001

Bio:

6 years ago, two friends, Steve Bishop & Chris Ruiz, met in a tiny guest house in the South Bay Area and began producing most forms of electronic music. Realizing that each brought what the other was lacking musically, they decided to join forces. Joint Effort was born!

Their motto has been an approach to the way they’ve created music since the beginning: scouting musical talent of all styles and after giving over their own talents to the scouted musicians, Joint Effort begins to harvest the creative potential between all artists involved in the particular project.

The result is a blend of funky yet refined beats and licks in which all musicians involved, are more than satisfied with, even for those who’s musical endeavor delved for the first time into the electronic realm.

Joint Effort now resides both in South Lake Tahoe and San Jose and are currently launching their respective labels Opium Scent Music & Deep Tone Laboratoriez along with their house music label Housekeeping Records.

Members:

Steve Bishop previously known as Peak, currently known as Stephen Nicholas- producer, dj, co-founder Chris Ruiz previously known as Nocturnal, currently known as Numinous- producer, dj, co-founder rotating line-up of special guest musicians such as Patrick Mateo aka Podge courtesy of House of Love Recordings, Scuba Diver, Mc Blaze aka Joan of Arc from Sacramento, Keith Brinkley aka Softface from “The Groom Wears Black” (bass, keys), Ron Adair, Self Advocate and many others.

State of Fluxus - Ventura County Reporter

State of Fluxus - Ventura County Reporter | Downtempo Trip Hop Electronic Music | Scoop.it
If you wanted to discover any kind of weird / difficult / experimental music on a live basis in Ventura in the ’90s, chances are you saw it at Art City II in Ventura. From 1991 until its closing in January 2002, Art City hosted a dazzling and dizzying myriad of cultural treasures amid the working studios of many local Ventura artists. The space was a mad welter of exotic stones finessed by sculptors from their sepulchral raw states to become art as jaggedly individualistic as the scene it reflected. More often than not, if you saw a performance there, you took away a strange and insidious mixture of ground stone dust along with the overall sense of cultural enlightenment.

Pencilbrain - Follow Me

Pencilbrain - Follow Me | Downtempo Trip Hop Electronic Music | Scoop.it
6th track from the album "Diverted Witness", ©2002 Pencilbrain Records

Dutch/USA/Balkan outfit Pencilbrain is formed in 1999. The collective has released their first two singles in 2000. ..Follow Me.. with Sara Jay (Massive Attack) and ..Central Line South.. which one reviewer labeled as ..the ultimate "sound" of urban life... In 2000 they've released their debut CD "Diverted Witness" praised for it's diversity in sounds and styles. "Diverted Witness" like the band itself, defied the rules of categorizing and simultaneously appeared on charts as diverse as rock and lounge, alternative and jazz. The reviewers used genre like downtempo, abstract sounds, nu jazz, laid-back soul, funk, lounge, brokenbeat, acid jazz, rock, hip-hop and electronica to describe their sound, one used all of them in a review.

At the time they compared Pencilbrain to acts like Leftfield, Massive Attack, Prodigy, Cinematic Orchhestra, Portishead, and Radiohead.

"Our music has no particle genre or style, It is simply our music, and reflects whatever we are into at the time we make it. "
