"Art Brewer is simply a living legend of surf photography.

A former photo editor at Surfer Magazine in the 1980s when it was unequivocally the "Bible of the sport," he has shaped the entire visual medium of not only surfing, but wavescapes in general.

..get on the A Train and get into the city for the opening reception of Art Brewer: Surf Evolution, a fine art photography show celebrating his 40 years behind the lens."

Saving Australian Boardmaking

Saving Australian Boardmaking | Down The Line | Scoop.it

"Last October surfboard company BASE abruptly closed its factory on the Gold Coast, with the direct loss of 30 jobs.

Since then, nearby D’Arcy Surfboards has announced it is shedding workers and downsizing from a state-of-the art, purpose-built factory into a backyard workshop.

Is the death of Australian surfboard-making inevitable?

...  the informal rule that “master-shapers” must have carved out at least 30,000 boards ... original generation of Australian surfboard-makers is growing old, and with rare exception has failed to train up newcomers."

VIDEO: Splinters (Indigenous Surfing In Papua New Guinea) | Down The Line | Scoop.it

"...at the foot of the Biwani mountain range... When we rolled through in the morning we noticed what appeared to be miniature wooden surf boards leaning up against houses.

We came back through a few hours later and were stunned to see a bunch of kids from the village surfing on these tiny boards on a shallow gurgling reef break."

"The bottom line is -- we are all surfers. The common experience of wave riding is a point of reference that both cultures understand.

Papua New Guineans get just as stoked as San Diegans when they get barreled."

A New Model: Surboards & Countertops

A New Model: Surboards & Countertops | Down The Line | Scoop.it

What Ken Trinder, founder & CEO, says on EOS' Countertops:

"We created an anti-microbial countertop that just passed EPA testing.  The countertop will kill all bacteria in under two hours. It basically self-sanitizes. We’re now in the process of registering our public health claims with the EPA..."

And on Shrine Surfboards:

"What I do differently is I try to basically use the most expensive materials I can find--a particular kind of foam, and only carbon fiber cloth, which is used on the hulls of boats and in some airplanes. And all have some element of artistic flair: a shell inlay, or wood. No board’s ever the same; I try to make each as unique as possible."

Clark Foam abruptly shutting down (seemingly due to frustrations with environmental challenges). It was the death of a monopoly for surfboard blanks...

...the industry innovated and has blossomed into something far better and more reflective of modern tastes and issues.

Transforming a $7B Industry

Transforming a $7B Industry | Down The Line | Scoop.it

We all know that making surfboards is a dirty, hazardous process.  But exactly how will this enormeous industry, even beyond surfboards, change to become sustainable?  Where do you begin?

WashWise has an approach, proven in advocating the use of front-loading washers a few years back:

Step 1. Educate And Engage

Step 2. Build Acceptance

Step 3. Certify And Incentivize

http://www.washwiserebate.com/about/index.html

Since its inception in 2007, the WashWise program has saved a total of 24.5 million kWh energy and 678 million gallons of water.

Sustainable Surf has some ideas too: http://ww.sustainablesurf.org/ecoboard

"Sustainable Surf recently conducted research that shows 97% of the participants in W2W would prefer a recycled foam foam board for their next purchase. “Ultimately, we are trying to show the industry quantitative proof that demand for sustainable surfboards is growing rapidly, so more surfboard makers offer it to customers” says Whilden."

KS11 Quiver for Volcom Fiji Pro 2012

KS11 Quiver for Volcom Fiji Pro 2012 | Down The Line | Scoop.it

"He likes his rail still a bit on the thinner side so that he still keeps the sensitivity of a thinner board on turns. For Resturants, Kelly will most likely turn to a smaller board that turns tight in the pocket and generates a lot of speed so he can cover some distance in the tube but not out run it–staying deeper for longer will be his goal there."
