3 ways higher ed can avoid social media devastation   | Social Media: Don't Hate the Hashtag | Scoop.it
A tenured sociology professor at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., landed in hot water because of his activity on Facebook. A college news site found the professor’s posts—one of which included an offensive hashtag and reference to last summer’s congressional shooting in Virginia—and published them online. Instantaneously, the story sparked national attention. Trinity had to close its doors at one point as the professor and campus received death threats.

In the age of social media, incidents like this occur frequently. The solution: Colleges and universities need to proactively prevent these types of social-media issues from wreaking havoc on their reputations and day-to-day activities.

On Twitter, falsehood spreads faster than truth - Social media and fake news | Social Media: Don't Hate the Hashtag | Scoop.it

"The reason false information does better than the true stuff is simple, say the researchers. Things spread through social networks because they are appealing, not because they are true. One way to make news appealing is to make it novel."

Another insight to discuss with students. When reading news shared on social media, take time to consider: Can I find this from another reputable source? Am I sharing it because it evoked some emotion? Am I sharing it to be "first with the news?"

Snapchat 101: How to Turn On Ghost Mode for Snap Map to Keep Your Location Private | Social Media: Don't Hate the Hashtag | Scoop.it
Snapchat recently updated their Android and iPhone apps with a new feature called Snap Map which lets you share your current location with other Snapchatters, as well as see their current locations. It may sound like an interesting new feature, but sharing your exact location with all of your Snapchat followers is dangerous, to say the least. Luckily, it's easy to turn this feature off. If you're still not sure what Snap Map is, you can watch Snap's video below to see how it works or check out our article on the subject. A lawyer rewrote Instagram’s terms of use ‘in plain English’ so kids would know their privacy rights

A lawyer rewrote Instagram’s terms of use ‘in plain English’ so kids would know their privacy rights | Social Media: Don't Hate the Hashtag | Scoop.it

Amy B. Wang writes: "It’s no secret that teenagers love social media.

Members of “Generation Z” can spend up to nine hours a day sharing photos on Instagram, consuming “content” on YouTube and talking to friends on Snapchat. (Just don’t ask them to get excited about Facebook.)

But how much do these teens understand what they’ve agreed to give up when they start an account with those sites?

Probably very little, according to a report released last week — and dense terms and conditions that are “impenetrable and largely ignored” are partly to blame."

How to Use Twitter's Advanced Search

How to Use Twitter's Advanced Search | Social Media: Don't Hate the Hashtag | Scoop.it

Twitter’s regular search feature can’t help you find any highly specific information. Luckily, Twitter’s advanced search can.

But using advanced search isn’t as intuitive as using the basic search functions, so we’ve covered the four steps to master advanced search. Once you have these down, you can explore the various search fields depending on your search intent.

How do you use Twitter Advanced Search?
1. Enter your search into the search bar on Twitter.
2. At the top left of your results page, click “Search filters” and then “Advanced search.”
3. Fill in the appropriate fields to refine search results.
4. Click “search” to see results.

Detailed tips follow.

Is Social Media The New Tobacco? – NewCo Shift

Is Social Media The New Tobacco? – NewCo Shift | Social Media: Don't Hate the Hashtag | Scoop.it

I’ll admit I was a slow-follower when the iPhone launched ten years ago. I was suspicious of Apple’s intent — I was not fan of its closed, vertically integrated model — and the market’s infatuation with apps felt like a fad that would ultimately fade. When I finally did get an iPhone, I felt complicit in the what amounted to internet climate change: slowly but surely, our new addictions were bound to swamp all that we had worked so hard to build on the open web.

As Tristan Harris and many others have pointed out, the economic incentives driving our mobile landscape (in short: advertising) are based fundamentally on the science of addiction, and addicted we certainly are.

And as we’ve learned from tobacco and processed foods, an industry based on addiction preys on the young.

In what I hope will be a landmark piece in the Atlantic, social scientist Jean M. Twenge, who has studied generational differences for decades, concludes that the first generation of teenagers to grow up with a smartphone in their hands is demonstrating wildly different patterns from any group she’s previously researched. And those patterns are not good....

How Long Should Your Videos Be? Ideal Lengths for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube

How Long Should Your Videos Be? Ideal Lengths for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube | Social Media: Don't Hate the Hashtag | Scoop.it

Video marketers know we lack patience. So they're starting to tailor content for our dwindling attention spans. In fact, 56% of all videos published in the last year are less than 2 minutes long.

But marketers must innovate further because users expect different video lengths on different platforms. Odds are, they're more willing to watch a 2 minute long video on YouTube than on Twitter.

If you don't customize video length for each platform, then you're not fully catering to your audience. Sooner or later, the attention they give to your brand will wither away.

That's why we decided to create this handy, bookmarkable infographic about the optimal video length for the most popular video channels. To help you better engage your audience on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, we extracted insights from HubSpot's own social and YouTube data, and combined it with existing research in the area. ...
