Sleep: Lack of sleep increases health-risk behaviors of students

Sleep: Lack of sleep increases health-risk behaviors of students | does school start to early | Scoop.it

Essential Question: Are early school start times contributing to increased at-risk behavior among our students?

This study examined the relationship between insufficient sleep (less than 8 hours on average on school nights) and health-risk behaviors in teens.

Results

Insufficient sleep on an average school night was reported by 68.9% of students.

Insufficient sleep was associated with higher odds of the following:

- current use of cigarettes,

- marijuana, and

- alcohol;

- current sexual activity;

- seriously considered attempting suicide;

- feeling sad or hopeless;

- physical fighting,

- not being physically active at least 60 min ≥ 5 days in the past 7 days,

- using the computer ≥ 3 h/day, and

- drinking soda/pop > 1 time/day.

Conclusion
Two-thirds of adolescent students reported insufficient sleep, which was associated with many health-risk behaviors. Greater awareness of the impact of sleep insufficiency is vital.

Highlights

► 68.9% of U.S. high school students reported insufficient sleep.

► Insufficient sleep was associated with a variety of health-risk behaviors.

► Variations by race and sex in these associations were found.

Może powinniśmy się oburzyć na zbyt wczesne zaczynanie lekcji w polskich szkołach i zacząć ruch na rzecz zaczynania zajęć o 9:00?

Buffalo High School gets out earlier than any neighboring high school — at least thirty minutes earlier than Monticello, Delano, St. Michael-Alberville, or Rockford. However, it's also the earliest starting school in the area.
