How To Be A Happy And Successful Creative Freelancer (Or Work With One)

How To Be A Happy And Successful Creative Freelancer (Or Work With One) | Documentary Landscapes | Scoop.it

When talking to creative freelancers, there’s one phrase that’s often repeated: “I don’t mean to sound cheesy or cliché but…” What follows that "but" ranges from waxing lyrical about the ability to control the professional and personal work they do, to an appreciation of work-life balance, to a full-on embrace of occupational joy and diversity. “It sounds cheesy, but if I’m not having fun, I’m not happy.”

8 Questions Writers Must Ask When Developing Audience Profiles | Raindance Canada

8 Questions Writers Must Ask When Developing Audience Profiles | Raindance Canada | Documentary Landscapes | Scoop.it

One way to look at screenwriting (and filmmaking) is that you are developing a product just like any orher manufacturer, and getting audience research right is a basic first step.

Knowing who your audience actually are is one of the basic tenants of marketing, so too with storytellers.

Is Crowdfunding the Documentary Industry's Cure for Austerity?

Is Crowdfunding the Documentary Industry's Cure for Austerity? | Documentary Landscapes | Scoop.it

Crowdfunding is being talked about a lot as the hot new way to finance creative projects such as films, books, games, technology, working on the principle that a large number of individuals will come together to support and fund projects that they really care about.

Notes:

- Kickstarter has launched in the UK

- Crowdfunding offers alternative to funding cuts in arts organisations

- Kickstarter in the US has had over 32000 successful projects raise a total of nearly $350m, making it one of the country's biggest arts funders

- It is a huge undertaking to run a crowdfunding campaign - a massive amount of effort, writing hundreds of personal emails, requiring arts organisation fundraisers to be imaginative business entrepreneurs rather than artistic cultural fundraisers.

- Since Kickstarter's launch in 2009, some 2236 documentary projects have raised $38 million through an average of 222 pledges

- Successful crowdfunding documentaries include AI Wei Wei - Never Sorry by Allison Klayman and My Reincarnation by Jennifer Fox

What Filmmakers Need To Know About VOD

What Filmmakers Need To Know About VOD | Documentary Landscapes | Scoop.it
In this filmmaking article, LA Producer Jason Brubaker explains what filmmakers need to know about VOD.

"As filmmakers, we are in the midst of a major movie distribution paradigm shift. Traditional theatrical release models as well as DVD sales channels are being replaced by video on demand platforms. These changes have forever altered the ways in which movies are seen and sold. As a consequence, getting into Sundance and selling your movie for instant fame, fortune and a three picture is probably not a realistic business plan."

INDIE GAME CASE STUDY: Tech & Audience - News - Indie Game: The Movie - A Video Game Documentary | Documentary Landscapes | Scoop.it

Indie Game: The Movie (IGTM) is very much a product of our times. This film could not have been made & released the way it was five years ago, heck, not even 2-3 years ago. The film, and us, are hugely indebted to the technology, tools and evolving audience attitudes that made all this possible.
