Pop Up Archive Breathes New (Media) Life into Dusty Archives | PBS

Pop Up Archive Breathes New (Media) Life into Dusty Archives | PBS | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Pop Up Archive is an interesting project for archiving digital content in collaboration with SoundCloud and the Internet Archive.

The project created using web services (Omeka, an open source web publishing platform integrated with Wordpress) makes "archival audiovisual content searchable, shareable and reusable, without requiring technical expertise or substantial resources from producers"

Their goal is "for Pop Up Archive participants to realize the added efficiency of sharing content using web services, and feel empowered to catalog their content at the time of its creation -- without even realizing that they have made an active decision to archive. Content creators know the most about the material that they create, and it's ideal to organize and preserve that material in a manner that incorporates easily into existing workflows, at the time of creation, rather than at some point down the road."

excerpts:

We're paying close attention as audio and video material finds new life on the web and the boundaries between media formats increasingly blur. Frameworks like Zeega and libraries like Mozilla's Popcorn.js are stretching our definitions of interactive documentary and narrative, and producers and stations are incorporating web resources of all formats in beautiful work

Why not create better partnerships between innovators in content creation and innovators in content preservation and access? For these projects, Pop Up Archive will provide a gateway to invaluable archival material.

Documentary Evolution
This Scoop.it channel I started more than 6 years ago as part of my passioned research across documentary field is shutting down. I will not be updating it anymore due to the changed conditions dictated by Scoop.it that allow only 50 links for every free topic. Running this page has always been incredibly rewarding but also very time-consuming. I want to thank all the amazing people who have collaborated with me over the years.

Walking in another’s virtual shoes: Do 360-degree video news stories generate empathy in viewers? | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

Executive Summary Does immersion yield empathy? The aim of this report is to address the question of whether news media—in this instance, short-form journalistic stories—presented in a 360-degree video format affects a user’s empathetic response to the material. If so, what might the advantage of such a response be, and could it include improvement […]

Human Assets

Human Assets | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

We need a new definition of human value in media and a new definition of what a documentary is. We are being presented with one of the greatest challenges to journalism and documentary that we have yet faced: How can we redefine our craft when we can no longer tell truth from fiction?

VR / AR Fundamentals — Prologue – Michael Naimark –

VR / AR Fundamentals — Prologue – Michael Naimark – | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it

I get calls from novice VR/AR producers and from check-writing executives worried about expensive camera stitching, or wanting awesome spatial sound, or feeling obliged to always fill the entire 360 degree view. But all too often they are unaware of nodal points and computational photography, of phase differences and binaural audio, or of creative alternatives to full 360s from the arts community.

The New Storytellers: Documentary Filmmaking in the 21st Century

The New Storytellers: Documentary Filmmaking in the 21st Century | Documentary Evolution | Scoop.it
Sixty years ago, synchronous sound and the advent of television dramatically transformed documentary filmmaking. Once again, we are experiencing a major technological evolution that offers new opportunities and new challenges. 21st century filmmaking tools, social media, and the Internet are giving rise to transmedia, interactive, and immersive modes of nonfiction storytelling. How we create and distribute nonfiction film is substantially changing, not only how we tell stories but also who is telling them, who is watching them, and who is participating in them
