ghbrett's insight:

I enjoyed near the end of the book when Sherry writes about sending and receiving letters from her mother while she was in college. In comparison, her daughter is studying in Ireland and they communicate almost daily via email, video conferencing. But much of that digital communication is ephemeral, where as the the analog letters have been around for decades. Food for thought.

Accessible Video Captioning for Distance Educat... | Distance Ed Archive | Scoop.it

"The utilization of video for distance education has become imperative in online learning programs. Video is an engaging medium creating conversation and community, but disabled students are shut out as accessibility issues arise. Captions are required for the deaf to follow spoken content of a video. Similarly, the blind require accessible text for screen readers. Knowing this, institutions of higher education face legal, functional, and ethical challenges when providing accessible video accommodations. In this session, 3Play Media will explain accessibility laws and legal requirements for students and staff, while Boston University’s (BU) Office of Distance Education covers institutional accessibility costs, derived benefits and best practices for accessible technologies." - See more at: http://www.3playmedia.com

Theoretical Frame work-I: Androgogy

"Andragogy
Knowles (1968) popularized this European concept over thirty years ago. Andragogy, (andr - ‘man’), contrasted with pedagogy, means “the art and science of helping adults learn” (Knowles, 1980). Knowles labeled andragogy as an emerging technology which facilitates the development and implementation of learning activities for adults. This emerging technology is based on five andragogical assumptions of the adult learner:

1. Self-Concept, 2. Experience, 3. Readiness, 4. Orientation, and 5. Motivation"

ghbrett's insight:

This article provides background and basis for androgogy, a European concept developed over thirty years ago. Here it is applied to the community of adult learners. This is one of a number of related articles in the blog "MOOC Survival Guide." This blog is current and has other articles on topics related to how the learner can survive MOOC environments and concurrently what aspects MOOC developers should consider as they create the massive online courses.

MOOC Verses DOCC | Open Research & Learning

MOOC Verses DOCC | Open Research & Learning | Distance Ed Archive | Scoop.it

'It was only a matter of time before massive open online courses (MOOC) were challenged to see online learning in a new light. Distributed Open Collaborative Course (DOCC) has a different approach to how students should learn through online education and the role of the instructor. Where MOOCs facilitated the traditional sense of teaching, having one instructor who values the topic they teach. DOCC has expanded this idea to include many instructors, experts, and guest lecturers from various regions to teach the students.

The belief for DOCC is that it takes more than one instructor on a subject for students to truly learn a topic. DOCC focuses on interaction between students, teachers, and peers to expand on their topic, while learning from one another is the vital component. Anne Balsamo, dean of the School of Media Studies at The New School and co-facilitator of the DOCC, said “who you learn with is as important as what you learn. Learning is a relationship, not just something that can be measured by outcomes or formal metrics.”" - From /source - http://proctorfree.com/mooc-verses-dooc

The Adult Learner and MOOCs (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu

The Adult Learner and MOOCs (EDUCAUSE Review) | EDUCAUSE.edu | Distance Ed Archive | Scoop.it

EDUCAUSE Review Online --

Article: The Adult Learner and MOOCs

"In the past twelve months, many interesting alternative models to the learning that has traditionally occurred in the classroom have been presented. Students are hacking their education by gaining more non-collegiate credit through their employers and looking to providers such as Udacity and Coursera for additional learning. This has been the year of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC): a recent search on Google Trends for Massive Open Online Course shows the trend picked up in February-March 2012, peaked in March 2013, and was down by almost 20 percent in June 2013. We're seeing the trend of the MOOC disappear and the work of the MOOC begin.

Colorado State University–Global Campus (CSU-Global) is one of the newest public universities in the United States and is the only fully online, independently accredited state university with a mission of helping adult, non-traditional students complete their bachelor's degrees and earn master's degrees. As an institution focused on adults, we understand that quality learning emphasizing real-world skills happens inside and outside the classroom. That's why we have enjoyed the growth of MOOCs: they have so much potential to be a positive force for motivated adults who want not only to learn but also possibly to earn credit for that learning."
