U.S. Thanksgiving hides growing poverty, homelessness | Dispossession | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON — Thanksgiving tends to be a pretty full day for U.S. President Barack Obama, what with the annual ritual of pardoning the White House Turkey. This year 80 gobblers competed for the reprieve.
Simon Grew's insight:

"While the 38-pound prized National Turkey named Popcorn was spared the axe Wednesday and sent off to live the rest of his days at the publicly owned Morven Park’s Turkey Hill in Virginia, the city’s homeless can find no such sanctuary."

Homelessness has dropped 9 percent since 2007. Will it last?

Homelessness has dropped 9 percent since 2007. Will it last? | Dispossession | Scoop.it
On a single night last January, an estimated 610,042 people around the United States were homeless. But that number appears to be falling. (Homelessness has dropped 9 percent since 2007. Will that last?
Simon Grew's insight:

The minute I read "Homelessness has dropped 9 percent since 2007." I got worried. We should not be deluded; homelessness is real and growing. Reason for serious concern comes later when you read about budget cuts in the present economic squeeze,

It is a modern fact of life that (whatever the financial system) you can be surviving one minute and then crash; everything is gone. Businesses, banks & financial Institutions, even countries. Individual financial security is no different

Sudden rise in homelessness blamed on housing shortage and the 'bedroom tax'

Sudden rise in homelessness blamed on housing shortage and the 'bedroom tax' | Dispossession | Scoop.it
The number of homeless people is rising sharply under the twin pressures of the shortage of housing and the impact of the Government's welfare reforms, according to a new study.
Simon Grew's insight:

"We need the Government to address the chronic lack of affordable housing, take real steps to improve the private rented sector and to urgently consider the impact its cuts to housing benefit are having, particularly in the capital.” ~ Julia Unwin, Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Meanwhile government ministers deny any linkage between welfare reforms and homelessness even though their own figures show the blackest picture for a decade. 9% of adults in England have experience of being homeless; not distributed evenly across the population but affecting the poor and vulnerable. Incomes are static or even falling while there is a shortage of affordable housing.

What It's Like to Fail

How one man went from writing jokes for Roseanne to homeless, and how he fought his way back using Craigslist.
Simon Grew's insight:

"The best description of life as a homeless person. The days are very long."

David Raether, a former comedy writer for the sitcom Roseanne who became homeless.  Reading his story is a reminder of how it can happen to anybody so easily. Homelessness cares not who you are (or were.) Those who have been there will find themselves repeatedly thinking "Ain't that the truth?" as they read; those that haven't will get some understanding of the isolation of being homeless.
