It will take time to see whether tools like Yoassarian or Random can genuinely expand our horizons. The key thing to keep in mind, though, is that while prediction might be necessary to combat predictability, software by itself can only do so much.

Why It’s Hard

The company is the body of its leaders.

Everything is on you as leader: both superficially, in that your work ethic, smarts, creativity, values, vision, etc. will determine the path and success of your company; and also fundamentally, in that your company will look, feel and operate in accord with your actual constitution. 

This is true in a long-term sense (you will reap what you sow) and in a short-term sense (if you’re enthusiastic today the company will feel up; if you’re down people will be miserable).

My sense is that enterprises that have collaboration "in their DNA" have a huge advantage.  Managers and Leaders at all levels can foster this by being seen to "Live" collaboration so that it is seen and felt to be a core value of the enterprise.

The Value of Postsecondary Credentials in the Labor Market

We study employers’ perceptions of postsecondary degrees using a field experiment. We randomly assign the sector and selectivity of institution to fictitious resumes and send them to real vacancy postings on a large online job board. According to our results, a bachelor’s degree in business from a for-profit “online” institution is 22 percent less likely to receive a callback than a similar degree from a non-selective public institution. Degrees from selective public institutions are relatively more likely to receive callbacks from employers posting higher-salaried jobs, suggesting that employers value college quality and the likelihood of a successful match when contacting applicants

Struggle: At the beginning, no one knows what you make or why they need it. They are unaware and distrustful too. Sometimes the struggle never ends, other times the story is so compelling and the value created so in demand that it appears to go by quickly. But the struggle is always there. When it comes to using loopholes, here are some guidelines you may want to consider:

  • Is it breaking the law? It may be Evil Week, but it's rarely a good idea to blatantly break the law. If there's money involved or some sort of profit at stake, it may be illegal, and getting caught has more serious consequences than just breaking a simple rule.
  • Is it affecting someone else? Consider the fact that someone else might get in trouble because of your actions. Are you taking advantage of someone who can't protect themselves?
  • Is it worth the trouble? You don't want to do anything that could lead to you losing your job or losing privileges.

Allow time and persevere. Pulling off a core shift takes many years, if not a decade, as PPG and other companies have shown. For example, it took Umicore, a global materials technology group, five years (2002–2007) to lay the basis for its transformation from a commodity supplier of base metals into a premium provider of emission control catalysts, rechargeable battery materials and other value-added solutions. It initially lost about half of its revenues by divesting its copper and zinc smelting business, but by 2010 it had quadrupled its revenues to €2 billion through a combination of acquisitions and organic growth.

Economic and social choices tend to come in clusters, as one decision drives another. Not surprisingly, those seeking to set up a stable family unit want a stable place to live. Again, while our survey showed that most Millennial movers will rent next, more than eight in 10 already own or plan to own their own home someday. Nor has the recent crash in home prices led Millennials to believe home ownership a poor investment. Based on stated aspirations, there is no reason to believe that this generation will be any less likely to own their homes.

Like most myths, there is some truth here – but only some. Last summer The Demand Institute surveyed over 10,000 U.S. households about their current living situations, moving intentions and home preferences as part of a broader research initiative to understand how U.S. consumers’ housing and community demand would evolve over the next five years. The survey included interviews with more than 1,000 households headed by Millennials – a group we define as those between the ages of 18 and 29.

True that employers should know what a student CAN do, and competency based evaluation is needed.  BUT, many skills are demonstrable these days...the ability to publish, create apps and software, works of art, etc.  One can demonstrate abilities in videos, ePortfolios, etc.  These methods are much more effective than sharing test scores and GPAs.

Position Is Huge for Smartphone Search Ad CTRs

Across mobile and desktop, paid search campaign clickthrough rates are highest for first-position ads—and this is especially prominent on smartphones. In all, search ads in the first position on smartphones account for close to 40% of clickthroughs.

In all, first-position ads on smartphones grabbed nearly 40% of clickthroughs—more than double the 18% for second-position spots. Desktop search ads in the first position accounted for 30% of CTRs, while those on tablets claimed 36%. The ANA is seeing plenty of organic growth too. The Masters of Marketing conference in Orlando this week has drawn a record crowd of 2,800 attendees, according to organizers. That's more than triple what the group drew to the same conference in 2008 just after the onset of the financial crisis, and up more than tenfold from the 250 attendees in 2001, when Mr. Liodice took over.
