A myriad of threats:

* Employers often cannot assess data breach exposure on unmanaged BYODs

*Lost or stolen BYODs  that  contain sensitive data, with less than 1 in 4 can be remotely wiped.

* When BYODs bypass inbound filters normally applied to corporate devices, they’re vulnerable to malware

and the list goes on and on

The Spirit of the Archivist and Its Relevance for Content Curators

The Spirit of the Archivist and Its Relevance for Content Curators | digitalassetman | Scoop.it

Via Robin Good
digitalassetman's insight:

Since graduating from library school, I’ve fielded occasional questions about archiving “as a professional in the field.” Then comes the second question, “So, what kind of archive do you work in?” But I don’t. Although I was trained as an archivist and care deeply about archives, I’ve been an editor or a content strategist on most of my recent projects. And though I sympathize with archivists’ anxiety about their continuing relevance, I’m also excited for them, as I am for anyone who has content worth sharing

What Is Visualization?

What Is Visualization? | digitalassetman | Scoop.it

This seems like a straightforward question, but it’s proven to be a difficult one to answer. Even visualization researchers don’t have a clear definition.

Is it synonymous with information graphics? Does visualization have to be computer generated? Does data have to be involved, or can it be abstract? The answers vary depending on who you ask.

Visualization is a medium. It’s not just an analysis tool nor just a way to prove a point more clearly through data.

Visualization is like books. There are different writing styles and categories, there are textbooks and there are novels, and they communicate ideas in different ways for varied purposes. And just like authors who use words to communicate, there are rules that you should always follow and others that are guidelines that you can bend and break...

There is a distinct layer of causes to this problem that I’ve been referring to collectively as “The Dark Side of Information Overload”, and they have a real presence in the murky undercurrents below the surface of the corporate culture. The formal culture, with its mission statements and values emphasizing fairness and cooperation, never acknowledges this Dark Side; but the employees can unerringly identify it and respond with defensive measures that can result in anything but cooperation

Why Most Branded Content Is Just Awful

Why Most Branded Content Is Just Awful | digitalassetman | Scoop.it

Around the world — in North America, the UK, Asia Pacific — approximately nine in 10 organizations produce content like media companies do to attract and retain customers. That's correct: Everybody's doing it.But that doesn't mean companies are doing it well. Far from it.Let's be honest. The majority of content produced by brands through blog posts, enewsletters, social media posts, print magazines and webinars is flat out awful. In many cases, the content is self-serving, not useful and, maybe the worst, pointless. Even when you ask marketers themselves, just one in three believe that the content they develop is effective. Why is branded content so bad?....

Is human super-intelligence a bad idea?

Is human super-intelligence a bad idea? | digitalassetman | Scoop.it
Advocates of human enhancement often say that we ought to increase our intelligence as a species. But the consequences of actually doing this have never fully been explored.

Via Howard Rheingold

Howard Rheingold's curator insight, July 24, 2013 5:18 PM

Ever since I read Joseph Weizenbaum's prophetic warnings in "Computing Power and Human Reason" that computers are vastly multiplying the power of only one aspect of what most agree is "human," I have tempered my enthusiasm for mind-amplifiers with regular reflection on the potential shadow side.  It pays to regularly question the biggest goals of one's enterprise, whatever it may be but especially with regard to designing powerful new technologies and to reflect on which part is the means and which part is the end, so I paid attention to this critique of the idea of enhancing intelligence in the IQ sense. The critique is not about enhancing collective intelligence, but I recommend that other enthusiasts for augmented social cognition look at the possible future of that enterprise through the lens of this critique. I particularly take pause at the author George Dvorsky's suggesntion that "the biggest bang for the buck would be to concentrate on happiness." That's a hard argument to attack!
