While the previous incarnation of augmented reality using smartphones and tablets (using apps like Layar) fell a bit flat, I feel confident that AR glasses (ARGs) will be more successful and more lucrative for marketers.

Frank Rose: "When JWT Intelligence announced its "10 Trends for 2014 and Beyond" recently, trend #1 was "immersive experiences." Certainly you can feel this in New York: From Punchdrunk's Sleep No More (now running for nearly three years) to MoMA's Rain Room to Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirrored Room, people are willing to pay top dollar or line up for hours to experience something all-encompassing and beyond the ordinary. But why?"

In my view, the term "experience economy" is morphing into the "immersive" economy - and you will see the rise of more "immersive technology" to facilitate. Emergence has become Immersive.

"The security of users' data is critical, which is why we've invested so much in encryption and fight for transparency around government requests for information," says Google CEO Larry Page.
I still believe that encryption does not complete the job. The ultimate security is relinquishing control of the encryption key and passing it on directly to the user. Very similar to what mega.co.nz already does. Of course, if you lose your password you lose your data but somewhere along the line the user has to be responsible for his/her own data.

I have nothing to add to Robin Good's terrific insights: Robin Good's insight:
Picture these scenarios: The Freud Museum, in the spirit of its namesake, becomes a provider of mental retreat and therapy (I wonder if the docents will be licensed psychoanalysis?) These, according to the 40-page report “Museums in a Digital Age” from Arups, may actually be some of the likely new profiles of prestigious museums 25 years from now.
The report projects that:
"...future museums will see personalised content, new levels of sustainability and a visitor experience extended beyond present expectations of time and space." A rising desire among audiences to shape their own cultural experiences (“Collaborative Curation”) The opportunity for museum to become “curators of experiences” that extend beyond the boundaries of traditional exhibits or programs, or beyond the walls of the museum itself.
Source: http://futureofmuseums.blogspot.it/2013/11/museums-in-future-view-from-across-pond.html The idea of "collaborative curation" of museum collections by the actual users-visitors, is particularly fascinating. "Just as current consumer trends shift towards collaborative consumption, in the future, museums may employ new patterns of collaborative curation, allowing for individually curated experiences and giving the public greater control over both content and experience.Increased visitor participation will allow people themselves to reinvent the museum experience, enabling content that can adapt to the preferences of users in real-time."
My comment: If you are a curator and are interested in exploring and understanding what the future of large collections and museums may look like and which forces are going to be driving such changes, this is a good report to read.
Insightful. Inspiring 8/10

“As part of our agreement, we’ll pay Getty Images a fee for the data they share and will help make sure that their images get proper attribution,” Pinterest notes today. “We’re just getting started with Getty Images but we’re excited about the possibilities of what their data can help us deliver.”
Getty says that it will be providing two pieces of technology for this service. The first is its PicScout image recognition technology — which will crawl Pinterest to identify Getty Images on Pinterest. It will then link up those images with Getty’s metadata using its Connect API. “We’ll get a photo credit for our images on Pinterest’s site and a link back. Pinterest users get more context and have more fun,” Getty noted today.

The article implies that IT will continue to play a major role in businesses. When it comes to either a Private or a Hybrid cloud I agree, in fact I am sure that most biusinesses will opt for one of these options. Nonetheless, startups and / or businesses with low security requirements will position themselves to take advantage of the low costs associated with the Public cloud.

"When it comes to cloud computing there are two common pitfalls that businesses tend to fall into: over-estimating its power and under-estimating its potential effect. The former often leaves businesses under-provisioning for their infrastructure, trying to push their entire IT estate into a single platform rather than using cloud computing as part of the larger IT strategy. Meanwhile, many businesses also find themselves under-estimating the potential of the cloud. Merely lifting your IT environment into the cloud may offer some savings (in time or resource), but it's not going to be the IT 'revolution' that many are expecting."

If you are into understanding the real value of content curation and what are the characterizing traist that make it so valuable and unique for the future of journalism and of our collective ability to stay informed, here is an evergreen "classic" on what curation specifically entails, synthesized and outlined by the Mindy McAdams. When it comes to content curation, her list includes seven specific characterizing traits:
Her content curation identikit is as useful, truthful and relevant today as it was was 5 years ago when it was first published. Content curation reference. Must-read. 9/10 Full post: http://mindymcadams.com/tojou/2008/curation-and-journalists-as-curators/ Question to you: Five years on, today, what would you add to these traits, that in your view, fully characterizes content curation? The technology is powerful, and like the moniker suggests, “Big Data” is massive, leaving some executives with the impression that for these projects to be successful, IT departments must ready themselves to boil the proverbial ocean.

I went to a Google Apps For Education Summit last weekend. They did not say much about these changes, but interesting ideas were shared among participants. |
Instead of location, your AR marketing might be directed towards people looking at a specific object. For example, Charlie is visiting Chicago and decides to take in the view from the Willis Tower. He snaps a photo of the view to share on Facebook. After noting his location and the photo he just shared, a professional photographer (through hypercontextual ads) offers Charlie a framed copy of his own award-winning photo of the Chicago skyline.
Lastly, imagine you’re sitting in front of the TV watching your favorite show. You touch the side of your glasses to have your program “augmented” with additional content. Now, instead of just the program, you can also view recent news about the actors, announcements about upcoming shows and perhaps their social media information so you can connect with them.
