Google Strikes Smart Contact Lens deal to track Diabetes and Cure Farsightedness

Google Strikes Smart Contact Lens deal to track Diabetes and Cure Farsightedness | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
With Glass and Android Wear, Google has already invested a lot of time and resources into developing the next-generation of wearables, but it's another of its eye-focused projects that has today received its first major boost.

Via TechinBiz
Farid Mheir's insight:

Strangely I never wrote about this but it certainly is worth a mention because Google has now made very strong moves towards "atoms and not bits" as Sergei Brin put it a few days ago, stating that Google has invested in search (bits) for a long time and is now complementing its focus to physical devices (atoms) such as the self driving car or here the contact lens.

This story is of particular importance as it shows that Google is not in the business of making contact lenses (or cars) but providing the R&D to disrupt industries that are not making the radical shifts they can by using digital technology.

Google has way more experience driving a car than I do: Waymo reaches 5 million self-driven miles | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

This experience combines footage and real-time data from a trip around Metro Phoenix, Arizona in one of our Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans. It puts you at the very heart of the technology, letting you see through the “eyes” of our state-of-the-art sensors, including LiDAR, radar, and cameras. It brings to life how Waymo sees the world around it, recognizes objects like cars and pedestrians, predicts what those things will do, and then plans a safe path ahead.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I've been reporting on this since 2013 and thought useful to share that Google waymo is now actively self-driving cars in the Phoenix area. Today. Wow. Just follow the links to see what it feels like to ride a self-driving car in 360 degrees.

This #AgTech #Startup Just Built A Coinstar For Coffee #blockchain #traceability - this tech has huge potential as it can reduce the number of food products that are recalled via @qz | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Tech startup Bext360 has built a Coinstar-like device to grade coffee beans and pay the farmer for them right away.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is a concrete example of a use case for blockchain that shows it is now possible to trace the products from source to consumer. Blockchain technology provides a "distributed" system that can be "trusted". Why is this important? recently the US FDA has recalled 207M eggs due to salmonella: with proper traceability this number could have been much much lower: https://qz.com/1252939/egg-salmonella-recall-how-to-tell-if-a-specific-carton-is-affected/

That is why Starbucks is also considering similar technologies as explained here: https://www.wsj.com/articles/bringing-blockchain-to-the-coffee-cup-1523797205

One thing everybody forgets about Gartner’s hype cycle

One thing everybody forgets about Gartner’s hype cycle | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

At the peak of inflated expectations, you want to avoid overspending on technology and overpromising results. You don’t want to ignore the movement entirely, since there is fire smoldering below the smoke. But you want to: 1) evaluate claims carefully, 2) run things with an experimental mindset 3) focus on real learning.
In the trough of disillusionment, that’s when you want to pour gas on the fire. Leverage what you learned from your experimental phase to scale up the things you know work, because you’ve proven them in your business.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: digital transformation is really easy when you think about it.

*** at the peak of expectations are AI, blockchain, Internet of Things - be realistic and explore

*** in the through of disillusionment are marketing automation, eCommerce, mobile apps, website, etc. - put the pedal to the metal and do those things because they have been proven to work.

The 30 Elements of Consumer Value: A Hierarchy

The 30 Elements of Consumer Value: A Hierarchy | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Measuring —and delivering— what consumers really want.

We have identified 30 “elements of value”—fundamental attributes in their most essential and discrete forms. These elements fall into four categories: functional, emotional, life changing, and social impact. Some elements are more inwardly focused, primarily addressing consumers’ personal needs. For example, the life-changing element motivation is at the core of Fitbit’s exercise-tracking products. Others are outwardly focused, helping customers interact in or navigate the external world. The functional element organizes is central to The Container Store and Intuit’s TurboTax, because both help consumers deal with complexities in their world.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I find these elements of value to be a very useful tool when crafting digital strategies in B2C organizations. See the full paper in HBR here.

However, three emerging trends, along with the adoption of digital technologies, are threatening to leave traditional food retailers behind.

Inside GE’s Digital Transformation: the story as told by the CEO who lead a team of 300,000 people over 6000 days via @HBR | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

A CEO has different tasks in different cycles. Some CEOs are founders and builders. Others have the luxury of managing momentum through a stable economy or a period when business models aren’t being disrupted. My task was different: remaking a historic and iconic company during an extremely volatile time.

I led a team of 300,000 people for 6,000 days. I led through recessions, bubbles, and geopolitical risk. I saw at least three “black swan” events. New competitors emerged, business models changed, and we ushered in an entirely new way to invest. But we didn’t just persevere; we transformed the company. GE is well positioned to win in the future.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: GE's digital transformation is well documented and has not been easy - nor is it clear if it has been successful. This paper is the story a told by GE CEO. It shows how daunting a task it is to do a digital transformation in a large organization - and why so many fail (think Sears, Blockbusters, etc.)
