The vendor's focus on core R&D and channel-based selling proved a winning business strategy, but I think Sitecore has hit a ceiling in recent years.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: companies have been building website for close to years now and this post reminds us all that most still do not leverage the full power of analytics, personalization and other high end features of web platforms. Basically companies continue to create informational websites with little or no data analysis and gathering. My experience confirms this is mostly true. Sad.

The #web has become bloated and as more people access it on #mobile devices, the Impact of Page Weight on Load Time should remain a serious consideration for developers via @paulcalvano | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Page weight is an important metric to track, but we should always consider using appropriate statistical methods when tracking it on the web as a whole. Certainly track it for your sites – because as you’ve seen here, the size of content does matter. It’s not the only thing that matters – but the correlation is strong enough that a spike in page weight should merit some investigation.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this very detailed research from Netflix shows how important it is to keep web pages skinny - and highlights that so few of the 1000 top websites watch this important metric. Imagine the others...

Twitter to All Users: Change Your Password Now! — Krebs on Security | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Twitter just asked all 300+ million users to reset their passwords, citing the exposure of user passwords via a bug that stored passwords in plain text — without protecting them with any sort of encryption technology that would mask a Twitter user’s true password. The social media giant says it has fixed the bug and that so far its investigation hasn’t turned up any signs of a breach or that anyone misused the information. But if you have a Twitter account, please change your account password now.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: if you have a twitter account, change your password now. And at the same time review all the apps you have granted access to in twitter and revoke all the access except for those you absolutely need. Just in case...

Why Google Maps is GREAT and Apple maps is barely ok at best - a very detailed look - Thank you @gnat for these great finds | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Google has gathered so much data, in so many areas, that it’s now crunching it together and creating features that Apple can’t make—surrounding Google Maps with a moat of time.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: Google has been capturing and translating data for a very long time and by doing so it can provide digital services that way better than anything else their competitors can do. This example of maps is just one in many but this one is particularly well documented. Kudos.

FINALLY something that helps improve #privacy on social networks: Facebook will use facial recognition to tell you when people upload your picture | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

If anyone uploads a profile picture that includes your face, Facebook will alert you of that, too. “We’re doing this to prevent people from impersonating others on Facebook,” the company wrote on its blog Tuesday.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: anyone can post anything on Facebook or elsewhere on the net. Having a tool that spots your face on pictures to warn you may be the ultimate privacy-notification to come out of Facebook. I hope that other holders of large databases of pictures - especially Apple and Google because of their mobile phones - would do the same.

Algorithm-Driven Design: How #AI Is Changing Design

Algorithm-Driven Design: How #AI Is Changing Design | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

I’ve been following the idea of algorithm-driven design for several years now and have collected some practical examples. The tools of the approach can help us to construct a UI, prepare assets and content, and personalize the user experience. The information, though, has always been scarce and hasn’t been systematic. However, in 2016, the technological foundations of these tools became easily accessible, and the design community got interested in algorithms, neural networks and artificial intelligence (AI). Now is the time to rethink the modern role of the designer.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS

We think of AI having an impact in fields that require human repetitive work but rarely think it applies to creative activities such as web or logo design. Well of course, you are wrong and this paper explains why with a number of very powerful examples and tools.

How to Browse the Web and Leave No Trace | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
On today’s web it’s hard to set a (digital) foot online without it attracting dozens of trackers and log entries, as companies look to learn everything about you and sell that data on to advertisers. To hide you’ve got a few tools at your disposal, many of which we’ve talked about in the past, and all of which add up to a largely anonymous browsing experience. What we can’t do is promise 100 percent that you won’t be tracked—we’re not privy to the inner workings of the FBI or your employer’s IT system—but this is as much as you can do.

Only 12% of Americans Use a pwd mgmt software says @pewresearch report on Cybersecurity1 | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

This survey finds that a majority of Americans have directly experienced some form of data theft or fraud, that a sizeable share of the public thinks that their personal data have become less secure in recent years, and that many lack confidence in various institutions to keep their personal data safe from misuse. In addition, many Americans are failing to follow digital security best practices in their own personal lives, and a substantial majority expects that major cyberattacks will be a fact of life in the future.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

As I wrote recently in the "Pyramid of Digital Needs" (fmcs.digital/blog/pyramid-of-digital-needs/), security is one of the most basic needs. When we don't feel secure and private then it is difficult to enjoy the benefits of social networks and all the other tools that digital now provides. It is essential that corporations address security and privacy in a meaningful way in order for their clients, employees and partners to use their new digital tools and embrace the digital transformation that most enterprises have recently embarked on.

Public Perceptions of Privacy and Security in the Post-Snowden Era is Low says Report from @pewresearch

Public Perceptions of Privacy and Security in the Post-Snowden Era is Low says Report from @pewresearch  | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The majority of adults in a new survey by the Pew Research Center feel that their privacy is being challenged along such core dimensions as the security of their personal information and their ability to retain confidentiality.

When Americans are asked what comes to mind when they hear the word “privacy,” there are patterns to their answers. When responses are grouped into themes, the largest block of answers ties to concepts of security, safety, and protection. For many others, notions of secrecy and keeping things “hidden” are top of mind when thinking about privacy.

The Power of Data As the Next Big Thing in Content Marketing @HBR  | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
The diminishing effectiveness of conventional advertising and the rise of social media have led more and more brands to embrace content marketing. More and more companies are seeing themselves not just as advertisers, but as publishers, launching digital newsrooms, podcasts, and other forms of branded content in order keep their brands, perspectives, and value propositions in front of customers.
Farid Mheir's insight:

I wrote about this in the past numerous times and it is great to see HBR and others recognize this important trend: companies are sitting on huge amounts of information they can use to extract meaningful information and share it with their clients and employees to attract and retain them.
