This AI Drone Can Be Controlled by Your Eyes - opens opportunities in many fields including disabilities #AI #drone #enhancedVision | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Piloting a drone or an unmanned vehicle by only using your gaze sounds like a scene out of a science fiction movie, but now it’s a reality. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, and collaborators developed a deep learning system that uses NVIDIA GPUs to enable a user to control a drone by simply directing their eyes towards where they want to steer.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: being able to control devices without your hand - using eyes or voice - is still being explored. I find this a great example of merging new technologies - drone, eye gazing, AI - to expand digital transformation beyond the current scope envisioned today.

Podcast on digital disruption by #Accountants gives an idea of how much #AI #Blockchain #Automation #Cybersecurity will impact their industry - as I believe it will all professional services includ... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

You’re surrounded by disruption and rapid change. Maybe you’re looking for solutions. A way to seize opportunities. We all are. It’s a sprint to stay ahead of technology. Blockchain. Automation. AI. Cybersecurity. It will forever change the way accounting is done. And forever change those who do it. It’s time to reset, redefine and reskill. The way we learn. The way we work. And the way we move forward. Here, you’ll find what you need to not just survive, but adapt and thrive. And disrupt disruption.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I've been blogging about digital disruption since Jan 2013, and doing it since the early days of Internet in 1995. It is refreshing to see it being picked up by non technology professionals. Maybe a sign of the times that this thing is starting to really impact people, businesses and whole industries...?

#AI, #Automation and #BigData will create more jobs by 2030 than they will eliminate according to @McKinsey #Tech4Good | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Additional economic growth, including from business dynamism and rising productivity growth, will also continue to create jobs. Many other new occupations that we cannot currently imagine will also emerge and may account for as much as 10 percent of jobs created by 2030, if history is a guide. Moreover, technology itself has historically been a net job creator. For example, the introduction of the personal computer in the 1970s and 1980s created millions of jobs not just for semiconductor makers, but also for software and app developers of all types, customer-service representatives, and information analysts.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is a positive news about new technologies. However we must brace ourselves because many people will loose their jobs and not have the skills - or the willingness - to adapt. This will certainly create turmoil in companies - and possible whole countries. Prepare.

'Super Monster Wolf' a success in Japan farming trials

'Super Monster Wolf' a success in Japan farming trials | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

When it detects an approaching animal, its eyes light up and it starts to howl, Asahi TV says. Its manufacturers say the robot wolf uses solar-rechargeable batteries and has a range of howl noises so that animal threats don't get used to it.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: we think of robots as solutions for manufacturing problems but the real disruption will come from devices such as this one that "attack" problems outside the factory (pun intended ;-).

Blake Huffman's curator insight, March 19, 12:54 PM

People are trying to work on a new project to help with farming. This "wolf" is measured at 65 cm long and 50 cm tall. It is used to scare away animals that are trying to eat the crops. The creators said that the wolf is solar powered. It also has a loud howl noise that scares things away.

I think that these so called wolfs are definitely needed. I have know people who have had animals eat their crops and I can understand how bad that hurts farmers. It could also help farmers increase their profit from crops because there will be more to sell. Every farmer should have one of these wolfs.

Will robots completely replace humans from textile factory floors? sewBots is a new #robots that can #manufacture a t-shirt in half the time of a human HT @ADumas | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

A lot of the work that goes into making a t-shirt or a pair of jeans has been automated, except for cutting and sewing. Now machines are taking over one of these last surviving manual jobs, which humans have performed for hundreds of years.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the USA will bring back manufacturing from emerging countries - but it will not bring back jobs. This article is one more example of this trend: robots are now cheaper, faster, and generally better than humans at doing repetitive tasks. So much so that robots can manufacture clothes better than humans can. See the videos here: http://softwearautomation.com/digital-t-shirt-workline/

They say factories of the (near) future will have only one employee and one dog: the dog is there to keep humans out of the building, and the human is there to feed the dog! ;-).

If Workers Slack Off, the Wristband Will Know. (And #Amazon Has a Patent for It.) - #wearables are finding their way onto the shop and this is inevitable | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The e-commerce giant has won two patents for a tracking technology that can nudge a human hand in the right direction — toward a warehouse bin, say.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: wearables offer the potential to help track our every move, providing a trove of information to improve health and work. Already there is proof that Apple watches can detect heart attacks. If this patent from 2016 by Amazon is built into a product and deployed, work productivity can improve as well. Of course this may have serious implications for privacy or work requirements, but we must get used to it. With robots falling in price and AI letting them do more and more human-level tasks, the future of work is bound to be measured much more closely than it is today.

1.7 million items a day across its four fulfilment centres
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: On the heals of recent technology deals between Ocado and Carrefour in France and Sobeys in Canada, this paper and others explain how the technology works.

HUMAN-LESS WAREHOUSE

The technology is akin to a huge vending machine, where products are stored in compartments that robots can access when required. More important is that this technology can apply to any product you can buy online, not only grocery. In fact, figuring grocery item picking is probably the most difficult product category - with 3 temperature items (room, cold, frozen) and lots of small and delicate products (think tomatoes and meat). This will help reduce the cost and errors of web order fulfilment, and potentially speed delivery to make 1hr delays possible. When coupled with robot manipulation and self-driving delivery vans, the days of human-free order preparation and delivery is fast approaching.

RETAIL ARMAGGEDON

This will revolutionize the way we think of retail and distribution by making the store useless. The value chain will become produce-warehouse-home.

Aparicio says the research is exciting because the reliability of the arm offers a clear path toward commercialization.

Developments in machine dexterity may also be significant for the advancement of artificial intelligence. Manual dexterity played a critical role in the evolution of human intelligence, forming a virtuous feedback loop with sharper vision and increasing brain power. The ability to manipulate real objects more effectively seems certain to play a role in the evolution of artificial intelligence, too.

One small backflip for a #robot is one giant leaping backflip for humankind

One small backflip for a #robot is one giant leaping backflip for humankind | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Something that often bothers me about sci-fi is the loner inventor trope. A guy in a garage builds a robot, or AI, or frequently both that are somehow decades beyond the technology of his day. It’s hard to even appreciate how hard this is for robots to do, because it’s hard to appreciate how difficult walking still is for humanoids. I wrote a whole piece about the problem of building walking robots back in 2011 — it wasn’t pretty back then, and it’s still a challenge for most full-sized humanoids.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: we've heard that robots will replace humans for so many years now that we tend to dismiss such claims. This demonstration shows that this may change in the near future with huge impact on manufacturing of course but also in autonomous vehicles, delivery drones and maybe personal robots. And this would be something very significant given the difficulty that employers have finding workers for certain low skills jobs such as truck drivers https://www.forbes.com/pictures/lmh45edlmk/2017-30-under-30-the-st/#28c4963119b4

Walmart is using #shelf-scanning #robots to audit its stores via @gnat | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The robots themselves are produced by California-based Bossa Nova Robotics, and are about two-feet tall with an extendable tower containing lights and sensors for scanning shelves. They sit in recharging stations in the store until a human employee gives them a “mission” — e.g. checking a particular aisle to see what needs re-stocking. The robots are supposed to save workers’ time, but Walmart says it will also use the data they collect to improve efficiency nationwide.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: robots are moving out of the factory floor to invade all other spaces - from parking to retail stores. Here a great example of a robots to handle a routine and very important task for retailers: identifying what is on store shelves so as to minimize the out of stock items and mapping store layout for order pickers (every store is different so picking items is often a nightmare). Of course, this will impact jobs - even though Walmart says it won't.
