Bosch's Giant Robot Can Punch Weeds to Death

Bosch's Giant Robot Can Punch Weeds to Death | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
A modular agricultural robot from Bosch startup Deepfield Robotics deals with weeds the old fashioned way: violently
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

This looks like a proof of concept but it shows that autonomous machines should become a reality in the agriculture business sooner than we may think. Advances in self-driving technology, AI, networking, mobile devices, etc. have contributed to make this possible.

Other more generic applications such as harvesting barley also been introduced: http://fmcs.digital/blog/autonomous-robots-plant-tend-and-harvest-entire-crop-of-barley/

Farming 4.0 and Precision Agriculture: The future of agriculture in Europe via @competia

Farming 4.0 and Precision Agriculture: The future of agriculture in Europe via @competia | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Rising demand for bigger yields and higher environmental protection has put pressure on the agricultural sector to “produce more with less”. Smart farming or “farming 4.0.” could hold the key.

In Europe, Precision Agriculture (PA) and the integration of digital technology are set to become the most influential trends in the sector, as a growing number of farmers start to adopt digital technologies to run their businesses.

According to the machinery industry in Europe, 70 to 80% of new farm equipment sold now has some form of PA component technology inside. There are 4,500 manufacturers, producing 450 different machine types with an annual turnover of €26 billion. The sector also employs 135,000 people.

Farid Mheir's insight:

I don't write about agriculture very often although it is very close to my heart as I was a gentlemen farmer in my teenage years.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

Agriculture accounts for only 2% of workforce but 100% of the planet depends on it for its survival. Disrupting agriculture with digital technology may have the impact that genetic manipulations and fertilizers, with much less side effects. Moreover, digital agriculture transforms the lives of farmers themselves, turning them more into information workers surrounded by big data and robots than manure shovels and sunburns. And that is a good thing.

Jacob Bargeron's curator insight, January 10, 2017 1:04 PM

The demand for agricultural produce is rising and a good start to increasing the production of crops is precision agriculture. Precision agriculture could increase the amount of production, decrease the amount of crop damage, and use less fuels to plant and harvest the crops. I think Europeans should do this type of agriculture so they can export more produce and grow even more economically. If more Europeans did practice precision agriculture, there could be a growth in food production to export and potentially gain more money.

Is #agriculture the Next Digital Revolution Front?

Is #agriculture the Next Digital Revolution Front? | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Vodafone Australia has announced a partnership that will see the telecommunications provider help develop an online platform for Australian farmers as part of an effort to "digitally transform" the agriculture industry.

The three initiatives, led by the National Farmers' Federation (NFF), will see the establishment of an online platform to be used by farmers; the formation of an agricultural startup incubator named Sprout; and the founding of the Digital Agriculture Service (DAS).
