...

What's great is the number of people who are watching their favourite shows at a time or a place that suits them, outside of the show's traditional TV transmission time.

This is the modern way to measure TV ratings. From the same blog post, Sky describe that people are different, using the premiere of season 3 of Game of Thrones as an example:

"In total, more than 1.6m Sky customers watched the opening episode of the new season of Game of Thrones, with half a million watching the show live on Sky Atlantic and a further 750,000 recording the show on their Sky+HD box to watch later in the week.  Nearly one in ten downloaded the show through On Demand on their internet-connected Sky set-top box, while a further 230,000 streamed the series launch through Sky’s brilliant mobile TV service Sky Go."

This mean nearly 3 out of 4 watched the opening episode in a non-linear way. I believe Sky being both channel and MVPD has the best tools to measure such multiplatform usage.

Imagine that you wanted a new home theater system. But instead of spending hours in Best Buy or on Amazon comparing configurations and assembling the parts you needed, you could signal what you wanted and a company would create it for you.
