Channel 3 will start its simulcast broadcasting today on the digital system on Channel 33 HD after the proposal was approved on Friday by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).

Channel 3's agreement to simulcast breaks the current deadlock between the broadcaster and the NBTC but the chanel's insistence that it will continue to broadcast its analogue signal until 2020 could see the dispute resurface in the future.

Few months to the deadline set by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for all member countries to transit from analogue to digital broadcasting, otherwise referred to as Digital Switch Over (DSO), the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Mr. Emeka Mba, has said that government and other stakeholders, would require more than N60 billion for the completion of the switch over before June, 2015.

The public comment period for set-top box subsidies has been extended until 28 February 2015. The Universal Services and Access Agency of SA (USAASA)..

While the extension of the period for comments on STB subsidies to 28 February 2015 is another sign that South Africa will miss the June 2015 for #digitalmigration, a planned process of commenting and engaging with stakeholders is a necessary requirement for a digital switch over that includes consumers.

 

A migration that simply switches off the analogue signals to meet a deadline without the necessary prepartion and audience education, risks leaving large numbers in digitial limbo without any access to TV.
