Solving Wicked Problems: Using Systems Thinking in Design

Solving Wicked Problems: Using Systems Thinking in Design | Digital Imaging - Telling the Story | Scoop.it

My classmates and I are in the Design for Social Innovation program because we identified problems in our communities, companies, or cultures and are keen to figure them out. But before talking about any solution or outcome, one must first frame the problem—by thoughtfully examining the system it’s part of to understand where and how to get involved.

Learning to use systems thinking, a holistic approach to problem solving that emphasizes contextual understanding, has helped me with team management, project planning, creative work, and even relationships. And for wicked problems like healthcare that confront business, nature, and society, it’s proving to be imperative. So, where to even begin? “We have to invent boundaries for clarity and sanity,” advises systems thinking pioneer Donella Meadows. Sometimes a simple infographic works to tell the story. Designing visual maps and models helps us immediately find connections and describe relationships. Creating models helps in seeing the big picture and one's place within it.

Gordon Shupe's insight:

Info graphics don't really include digital photography, generally, but they are a fascinating way of displaying understanding, telling a story, and implying solutions.

I think "design" and "programming" are rushing at each other at light speed. Web pages will be made from branching if,then, else algorithms soon. Can't just drip paint on a canvas, so design's function will be making those algorithms make visual sense.

What The Screen Time Experts Do With Their Own Kids | MindShift | KQED News

Many of these experts are also parents, and their work informs their approach to making rules with their kids about phones, TV and other media.
Gordon Shupe's insight:
My children are adults now, but I think it would be good to factor in _how_ the screens are being used. If it is just for entertainment or 'mindless' consumption there should be limits as strict as these experts suggest. But if they are producing, analyzing, building, providing a legitimate service, etc.

30 Futuristic Fonts to Make Your Designs Stand Out

30 Futuristic Fonts to Make Your Designs Stand Out | Digital Imaging - Telling the Story | Scoop.it
We live in a highly digital world, which has affected not only the way in which we communicate with each other and the way we live our lives
Gordon Shupe's insight:
A big part of visual literacy in communication is the emotional impact of a carefully selected font.

One of the seldom celebrated innovations of Apple's Macintosh computer ( http://techland.time.com/2014/01/24/mac-thirtieth-anniversary/ ) is the redefinition of computer fonts and font management.

I think that fonts and the art of Typography is so fun, and I wish I had this article as a resource many times over the last couple of decades as I designed high tech logos, websites and flyers.

Gordon Shupe's insight:
FREE! This is a great app for those of us that need or nearly need bifocals, but don't like the hassle of wearing them. I find it especially nice to use in fine eating establishments that have fancy menus with tiny type on a background with little contrast. I am sure that the menu looks very cool under normal lighting, but the restaurant wants to provide a relaxing low light romantic setting, right?
Ok, so I look a little bit like a geek with my phone out (and attract extra attention with the flash on), but at least I am going to know what I am eating!

Where Do They Put All That Toxic Hurricane Debris?

Where Do They Put All That Toxic Hurricane Debris? | Digital Imaging - Telling the Story | Scoop.it
Florida is asking residents to report storm debris to a graphic web portal that went up Friday showing reports from around the state. Marianna Huntley of Ormond Beach reported a "wrecked boat sitting upside down next to my dock leaking oil and fluids into the river" while other people reported smashed wooden piers, junked jet skis and "trees 60 to 80 feet long and as big around as car tires."
