Landscape is Not Dead: The Last Stand

Landscape is Not Dead: The Last Stand | Just Photography | Scoop.it

There is something quite compelling about finding old war defences on the British coastline. These sea defences are the subject of Marc Wilson's book, The Last Stand: Northern Europe, in which he travels around Europe photographing the sea defences of Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Norway and France.

Mario Pires's curator insight, February 11, 2015 7:14 AM

"Layered into that is an Arcadian vision. With its focus on Northern Europe it's a dystopian Arcadia; there is a pagan feel to Wilson's pictures, a syncretic vision where geology, flora, climate and war find a single expression. And it's beautiful."

Mario Pires's curator insight, January 26, 2015 10:18 AM

"Clarke envisioned White as a figure both cool and dangerous, unbalanced and invincible, outfitted always with long, tousled hair and a perpetual cigarette. In conversation with The Guardian, the chef notes that today, he looks back on these youthful photos as evidence of a dissatisfaction and anguish that bubbled beneath his aloof exterior."

A Beginner’s Guide to Working With Flash Off-Camera

A Beginner’s Guide to Working With Flash Off-Camera | Just Photography | Scoop.it
I spent the first three years of my photography career avoiding the use of speedlights off-camera because I couldn’t wrap my head around the concepts and science behind them. I tried to cover it up saying things like “I’m a natural light photographer.” or “I really don’t like the aesthetics of flash photography.” But then, …

Review: Songbook by Alec Soth

Review: Songbook by Alec Soth | Just Photography | Scoop.it

Tender, innocuous words, yet full of vulnerability, Soth's latest work begins with an invitation. Arms held out, the dance beginning, we're invited to relearn songs we've forgotten or maybe never knew we knew. In many ways, it's hard to write something new about Soth.

Mario Pires's curator insight, February 11, 2015 7:19 AM

"In addition to small town photojournalism, the key visual reference for Songbook, is Evidence, the ur-photobook of decontextualized archival photographs by Mike Mandel and Larry Sultan from 1977. Shorn from their original text and accompanying archival context, Mandel and Sultan's images suggest a myriad of possible meanings. Like the odd images used by Mandel and Sultan, Soth's black-and-white images often utilize a strong flash, which not only freezes his subjects, but also places them under a clinical gaze and asks us to look more closely."
