Why Music Streaming Is More Lucrative For Labels [JAY FRANK] - hypebot

Why Music Streaming Is More Lucrative For Labels [JAY FRANK] - hypebot | Get the scoop on how digital media has changed the way we consume music | Scoop.it
By Jay Frank of FutureHit.DNA. In the great streaming royalty debate, the focus has been on tiny royalty rates per stream. Artists are up in arms, many are opting out of streaming services, and the noise and debate has been growing louder. Lost in that noise is a voice that is seldom heard: that of the record companies. There’s good reason for that: they’re making more money from streaming and the future looks extremely bright for them. Buried in the Christmas Eve edition of the Wall Street Journal (which is itself a day to bury news) is a short column...
Julia Quantrill's insight:

Music industry might benefit from music streaming but the artists again lose out...this content provided by hypebot.com who curate content on music and technology. Some data will be useful at the end of my presentation.

Ariyahu Ben Yisrael's curator insight, August 16, 2015 6:06 PM

Because digital music has become the new norm, it has also adversely affected the other avenues in which music is sought after. Since music is being digitally downloaded, there is no need for some of the older ways we made CD's.

How Billboard saved the music video | Get the scoop on how digital media has changed the way we consume music | Scoop.it
Adding YouTube to Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart almost guarantees that record companies will try even harder to force songs to go viral.
Julia Quantrill's insight:

Fortune magazine's report on how YouTube being added to the Billboard Chart has preserved the financial viability of the music video and ensures that chart rankings are based on actual consumption,  especially when YouTube is responsible for discovering many new artists and songs. Relevant content for this report will appear towards the end of the fourth phase of my presentation on YouTube and its influence on the evolution of music streaming.

Quatasia Dixon's curator insight, June 15, 2016 8:25 AM

This article talks about iTunes and the effect it has on physical music sales, like CDs. iTunes led the change to single downloading. They are responsible for 63% of digital music sales. However, the artists still have to rely on other endeavors, such as endorsements, touring, and merchandise. I think iTunes is a little better than streaming services like Spotify. With iTunes you either pay for the single or the album, but with Spotify its one monthly price for any song or album.
