LearnPod 12 - UK’s largest unconference for post-16 learning | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

Over the past two years, hundreds of delegates have attended the free innovative “unconference” at Doncaster College’s flagship Hub campus.

On the day, the agenda is set by delegates, who pitch ideas to share their expertise, or source the expertise of others to answer their questions. Some pitch interactive workshops and others pitch presentations, discussions and forums. Whilst it is not compulsory for delegates to do a presentation, as there is much to be gained from participation, those that do pitch their ideas can be sure that that their individual interests are met.

Digital Literacy: Results of the survey

Digital Literacy: Results of the survey | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

"...second year maths student at Greenwich University...doing a fantastic project focused on digital literacy in higher education."

"We were given the results of a survey on the staff and students definion of Digital Literacy.
Here is where things got hard!In front of us we had a massive load of definitions and our task was to read all of them and group them into categories. This was hard work because first we needed to go through all of them and decide the categories and then we had to go through them again to see how many fell into each category and had the proper statistics! I personally found this part really interesting and I really got into it, I didn't stop on the definion itself, I investigated further to find also some recurrent patters. The results were the following:"

Digital Assets | Digitally Ready

Digital Assets | Digitally Ready | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

We all have lots of digital stuff, be it photos, music, books or software. The University is good at backing up and generally looking after such stuff on centrally owned machines, but what do we do about the electronic stuff we have on our own machines?

At home we regularly back up the PC, but I know I am more lax about photos, particularly those on my phone, which I tend to leave until I run out of space when I do a wholesale delete later realising I’ve erased something I meant to keep.

So what is the point of this post? Well actually it is a request for help. Colleagues at Meiji University, Tokyo are doing a study “An East Asian perspective on the developing ethical and social values of digital object usage” – referred to as DESVALDO – we wanted to add a western perspective and so their survey is available in English at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DESVALDO1E if you can spare ten minutes to complete this it will help us, it will also help you realize just how much digital stuff you have.

Cargo-Bot, An Addictive iPad Game That Teaches Programming Concepts

Cargo-Bot, An Addictive iPad Game That Teaches Programming Concepts | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

The key to learning to code is learning to think like a computer--which is a hard thing to do. "It requires structured thinking, ability to abstract details away, and there’s little margin for error--one little typo and your program might do something entirely different from what you wanted," says game developer Rui Viana. "The real world just doesn’t work like that, so it’s hard to get your head around it." Which is precisely why Viana created Cargo-Bot, a simple iPad app that turns "thinking like a computer" into a genuinely addictive puzzle game. It’s like
Angry Birds crossed with Codecademy, and it’s total genius.

Developing digitial literacies for working in a digital world : JISC

Developing digitial literacies for working in a digital world : JISC | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

We heard this week that too many young people lack the social skills needed to get their first job. The report by the Work Foundation (PDF) doesn’t explicitly mention digital literacy, but perhaps it should. With an estimated 90% of UK jobs requiring some level of IT competency, the notion of digital literacy – those capabilities that equip an individual for living, learning and working in a digital society – is becoming a key requirement for employability.

But will they really make graduates more employable? Why are digital literacies important to institutions and students? Is this something new or the same old skills agenda just repackaged again?...

Developing digital literacy: trial and error? a JISC study | TeleRead

Developing digital literacy: trial and error? a JISC study | TeleRead | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
A JISC study (PDF) has found that learners develop a variety of digital literacies often through a social trial-and-error process, without the direct support or advice of their educational institutions.

Ben Showers JISC programme manager said: ‘By understanding and recognising students’ hidden behaviours and motivations, JISC is in a position to help universities and colleges develop better digital services and resources, with the student experience significantly improved.’

Watch a video interview with the two project leads David White (University of Oxford) and Lynn Silipigni Connaway (OCLC Research)

Digital literacy, digital natives, and the continuum of ambiguity (#openpeerreview) | dougbelshaw.com/blog

Digital literacy, digital natives, and the continuum of ambiguity (#openpeerreview) | dougbelshaw.com/blog | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it
I was going to do this earlier in 2012, but Alan Cann and Martin Weller beat me to it. And they’re researchers with track records. :-/

(As far as I understand it) Open Peer Review is a semi-structured process whereby people give you feedback on an article that you’re going to submit to an academic journal. I’m not a big fan of knowledge being locked-up in paid-for journals (hence the graphic above!)

I wrote an article with Steve Higgins, my thesis supervisor, entitled Digital literacy, digital natives, and the continuum of ambiguity but then didn’t really do anything with it. I’d like it to undergo a process of Open Peer Review.

What the heck is Digital Literacy anyways?

What the heck is Digital Literacy anyways? | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

"One of my TCDSB colleagues tweeted an article from the NY Times this morning about the new digital gap. Rather than it being an issue of access to technology, it has now become an issue of use. Kids from homes on the lower-end of the socio-economic scale are spending more time using technology for games, social networking and video viewing. The implication is that kids on the higher end of the scale receive more supervision from parents when it comes to use of technology. The article mentioned the need for “digital literacy skills” to be taught in order to help combat this problem."

This got me thinking about what “digital literacy” really means. Is digital literacy a universal term? Are their cultural nuances? How is digital literacy best imparted to students? Like any good digital citizen would, I started searching for answers online. I went to Slideshare first because I love the concise nature of slideshows. The work of Doug Belshaw popped out at me immediately. Belshaw is an Englishman and Ph.D. who wrote his doctoral thesis on Digital Literacy. I have included his TEDx Warwickshire talk about digital literacy and the slideshow that accompanied his talk. I have also included another presentation of his about digital literacy that can stand on its own. The TEDx slides only make sense within the context of the talk.

The JISC Developing Digital Literacies Programme team has been supporting its institutional projects to design and undertake a holistic evaluation. Projects are thinking critically about the nature, types and value of evidence as early indicators of change and several projects now have some useful visual representations of their project’s sphere of influence and evaluation strategy. A summary produced this month is now available from the JISC Design Studio at: http://bit.ly/designstudio-dlevaluation.

Howard Rheingold on Congress, Digital Literacy, and Making Political Movements | TechPresident

Howard Rheingold on Congress, Digital Literacy, and Making Political Movements | TechPresident | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

From Congress to the classroom, digital literacy is a key skill that's often sorely lacking, Howard Rheingold, author of the new book "Net Smart: How to Thrive Online," said on Thursday's Personal Democracy Plus call — but there are ways to change that.

Rheingold derided "the degree of technological ignorance" in government and in particular Congress. "It's worse than ignorance," he said. "It's know-nothingness ... it's so endemic." During the fight over the Stop Online Piracy Act, members of Congress could often be heard pleading their ignorance of the Internet and its inner workings even as debating legislation that some said would alter the structure of the global communications network.

The iPad and Pedagogy

The iPad and Pedagogy | Digital Literacy - Education | Scoop.it

"There is a running theme on this blog – ‘it’s not about the device’. I expected this view to be challenged by a visit to ESSA Academy in Bolton where they refer to an ‘ecosystem’ using Apple technology. I was prepared for technological practice that would be difficult to comprehend and a new building with an infrastructure we couldn’t hope to replicate. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Sure the devices are everywhere you look. Every student has an iPodtouch, every teacher has an iPad and MacbookAir which makes it easy to transfer work from student to staff and from home to school. However, ESSA staff don’t talk about the device in isolation. They talk about learning, pedagogy and making a difference to students lives. The device just makes that difference ‘more achievable’."
