Add Coding to Your Elementary Curriculum. . . Right Now - Edutopia

Add Coding to Your Elementary Curriculum. . . Right Now - Edutopia | Digital Learning | Scoop.it

"Code.org sums up the situation nicely:

"Computer science drives innovation in the U.S. economy and society. Despite growing demand for jobs in the field, it remains marginalized throughout the U.S. K-12 education system."

There are many reasons for this. As you well know, teachers are already stretched pretty thin, and often it seems like there's just no bandwidth to add something new to a very full schedule. Additionally, some schools have few or no computers and/or tablets for classroom use.

But the earlier we introduce children to coding, the more comfortable they will be when presented with more in-depth learning opportunities in middle and high school. Also, early exposure to coding helps teach children how important it is to understand computers as the valuable tools they are rather than merely fun playthings."

REVIEW: Learn Coding, 21st Century Fluencies and The Mathematical Process With Robot School

REVIEW: Learn Coding, 21st Century Fluencies and The Mathematical Process With Robot School | Digital Learning | Scoop.it
In this article I would like to explore a new coding app called Robot School from Next is Great (@nextisgreat). What hooked me immediately was how this app teachings kids to block code, but then shows them the syntax written in Swift. If you are unfamiliar, Swift is a new programming language for iOS. I love the concept of block code and syntax. It’s a perfect next step for avid coders.

ROBOTICS SCHOOL: In 21st century, this generation reached at the highest point of success in technology and we can think that this must  be the limit of technologies but the term Robotics School make them surprised. It is just a game for child fun but this might be in reality as well in future trends.

This looks really good. I can see the kids loving the 3d sprites and I am pleased to see that they can also access the code. We are going to try it out. Thanks for sharing.

I see huge value in the Thinglink tool (both App and Web), especially if you are a Google school and create or store digital archives online (as all you need is a URL to link too).

Our Year 4 to 6 teachers have created a Thinglink (placed on their clasblog) using their class photo and linked each one of the students blogs to it - simple, effective and visually capturing (Whanau love being able to view their blogs easily).

An audio recording doesn't have to go through the full-fledged production process of creating an a podcast in order for it to be a valuable activity for students. Creating short, unedited audio recordings is a good way for students to record and share their reflections on things that they have learned and observed in your classroom. The following five tools can all be used for creating and sharing short audio recordings."

Using Book Creator as an Assessment Tool

Using Book Creator as an Assessment Tool | Digital Learning | Scoop.it

Book creator has probably been the app I have used most, in my teaching, with pupils and in my training. The blank canvas aspect means it can be used across the whole curriculum and the addition of the pen tool in the last few weeks has added to that.

We use Showbie at school for pupils to share their work, including books made with Book Creator from the iPads and home to the teachers for assessment. Recently, we have used both the Pen Tool and Record feature to give feedback on the pupils' eBooks. The pupils send their books using Showbie and the teacher opens them up on his/her iPad. They can then annotate with their voice, pen and text. The book can then be sent back to the pupils using Showbie. The pupil can either change the original book and delete the annotated one or change the annotated book and delete the original.

The screenshot shows a book of a Science experiment. The teacher can annotate with arrows but also add audio feedback. All elements of Book Creator can be deleted so the pupil can restore any annotated book to the original.

This is obviously not a new idea but the pen tool has certainly made this quicker in a widely used app such as Book Creator.

How Much Data Is Generated On Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Tinder & WhatsApp Every Minute? | AllTwitter | Digital Learning | Scoop.it

Here’s the thing: the internet never sleeps.

Which means data never sleeps, and the internet sure likes to use up a lot of it. How much? In any given minute, 277,000 tweets are published on Twitter, 216,000 photos are sent to Instagram and 8,333 videos are shared on Vine.

And we’re just getting started. Over that same 60 second period, 347,222 photos are sent on WhatsApp, 416,667 swipes are made on Tinder and 3,472 images are pinned on Pinterest.

And if you think that’s impressive, Google receives 4 millions search queries, Facebook users share 2.46 million pieces of content and 204 million email messages are sent each and every minute of the day.

This visual from DOMO looks at how much data is generated every minute across the net....
