Arizona State has developed an approach that calls for it and how they teach to reflect the local community. For example, they have worked at having a proportionate reflection of students of colour, students living in poverty, and other demographic considerations in their enrolment numbers.

This idea is a gradual (slow) move towards reflecting the roles of post-secondary schools in a society.

A growing body of evidence shows that college students generally learn less when they use computers or tablets during lectures. That is probably true in workplace meetings, too.

 


In a series of experiments at Princeton University and the University of California, Los Angeles, students were randomly assigned either laptops or pen and paper for note-taking at a lecture. Those who had used laptops had substantially worse understanding of the lecture, as measured by a standardized test, than those who did not.

Halloween is packed away, Christmas looms on the horizon, report cards are consuming way too much time…all of which means it is almost one of my favourite weeks of the year: Hour of Code week!

This year Hour of Code officially runs from December 4th to 10th. Last year our teachers and administrators worked really hard to ensure that students in all grades and across all of our schools got a chance to try one or two coding activities during Hour of Code week. I hope we do even better this year and for the next several weeks my blog posts will be dedicated to helping teachers prepare for Hour of Code in their classroom.

However, in any discussion about coding, I think it is important to start off by discussing Computational Thinking. Computational Thinking is the basis for all coding. More importantly, it provides a great base for problem solving in any arena of life, from getting dressed for the snow to building a gingerbread house to completing a school project.

Many examinations and activities place emphasis on skills like remembering and understanding. Unfortunately, this leaves little room for incorporating the Bloom’s taxonomic levels of higher order thinking like analysis, evaluation, and creativity. We know from research that teaching our students higher-order thinking skills is one of the most beneficial steps we can take. After all, these are the skills they truly need to succeed beyond school, after all. But do our examinations and activities reflect this need? To help you find out, educator Andrew Churches has devised two very useful Bloom’s analysis tools that are available on his website Edorigami. These two tools specifically analyze the Bloom’s taxonomic levels of activities and assessments. Moreover, they investigate the balance between higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and lower-order thinking skills (LOTS). In doing so, they help you improve the taxonomic focus of your exams and activities or units. Download each tool by clicking on the image or the link below it.

"Our study of artificial intelligence and the new automation economy yielded eight postulates:

 

Fast. Moore's law (exponential computing power) has resulted in nearly free computing, storage and devices. It powers big data (internet of things), artificial intelligence----code that learns--and a growing number of enabling technologies like robotics.

 

Ubiquitous. Artificial intelligence-is the most important invention in history and has rapidly become ubiquitous in apps, platforms, and the power tools of automation.

 

Dislocation. Smart machines will eat the middle of the job market--in some places as soon as 10 years--and create even bigger income gaps. Hundreds of millions of jobs based on repetitive rules application will be phased out.

 

High change. Urbanization, automation, and globalization-- and the resulting clash of natural and man made systems--will result in unprecedented waves of novelty and complexity; we're all experiencing high change (including dislocation and disaster)...and it speeds up from here.

 

Tough issues. Exponential tech is swamping civic capacity to deal with new complicated ethical, educational, and economic issues. The civic focus will shift from production mechanisms to sharing mechanisms.

 

New contributions. There's never time to make a difference. AI will help cure disease, create clean energy, improve services, reduce drudgery, and make transportation cheap and safe.

 

New opportunity. There will be tens of millions of new high-wage jobs created in smart cities that skill up around the 4th Industrial Revolution. There's never been a better time to build an app, launch a campaign, start an organization.

 

New skills. Machine intelligence makes predictions cheap but human judgement valuable. Empathy and social interaction, creativity and design thinking, and an innovation mindset will be increasingly in demand.

 

It's likely to be a good news, bad news story--lots of change and dislocation but lots of opportunity--and that will play out a bit differently in every region depending on what leaders do next."

I hear it all the time: The world is changing, and schools need to change. Lots of us recognize that we should no longer be relying on the old model, where we just dump information into our students’ brains and they regurgitate it back. The world we live in today requires more of people: problem-solving skills, creativity, collaboration, the ability to innovate, iterate, and design solutions for problems that don’t even exist yet. The way we do school now just doesn’t prepare kids the way it should.

It’s a good message, a true message, but too often, that message leaves us hanging. We nod along, we agree that things need to be different, but then we go back to doing more or less what we’ve always done, because we aren’t exactly sure HOW to change school.

Having more girl classmates may help boys and girls alike boost their reading skills, according to a new study in the Journal of School Effectiveness and School Improvement.

Using data from the 2009 Program for International Student Assessment, a benchmarking test of 15-year-olds in 33 countries, the researchers looked at how school resources and social characteristics affected boys' and girls' reading performance. In each school, the researchers analyzed the concentration of poverty, the percentage of teachers with a college degree, and the proportion of girls to boys. 

On average across countries, students had higher reading scores in low-poverty schools and schools where a majority of teachers had a college degree. But researchers also found girls scored nearly 30 points higher than boys on a 600-point scale, and all students scored better when girls made up at least 60 percent of students in the school:
