SaaS: Enterprise Software Vendors Are Still Denying Reality

SaaS: Enterprise Software Vendors Are Still Denying Reality | Digital Human Resources News | Scoop.it
While some are buying up the competition while they still can or building their own SaaS-like operations, others are hiding their heads in the sand. For them, at least, the results aren't going to be pretty.
Phil Ammann's insight:

The Software-as-a-Service enterprise market is big -- some estimates put it at $1 trillion -- with small, startups playing a large part.

Some companies are ditching old platforms for new cloud-computing providers, offering affordable (or even pay-as-you-go) systems that are implemented in days, not months.  This is a tantalizing prospect for organizations facing shrinking budgets and profits.

Even though a few big companies are gearing up for what could amount to a huge transfer of wealth, many are simply not paying enough attention. This could be a costly mistake.

In this article for readwrite.com, the suggestion seems to be for everyone to “wake up!” It is not a matter of “if” companies jump on the SaaS bandwagon, but “when.”

The HR and Sustainability Nexus: An Untapped Asset?

The HR and Sustainability Nexus: An Untapped Asset? | Digital Human Resources News | Scoop.it

Of all the modern business buzzwords, the one having the deepest affect on every level of an organization is "sustainability."

The idea that an employee, department, program or heirarchy needs to 'pull its own weight" is certainly nothing new, but now with the label of "sustainability,' these values sound more structured -- even scientific.

Companies have always kept an eye on physical assets for "wear and tear,"  calculating the resources neccessary to keep things like trucks and equipment working at their peak.

Using the same metrics on human capital is just the newest twist.

According to John Boudreau, the "triple bottom line" of sustainability -- profit, planet and people -- is "increasingly a vital goal in financial and corporate social responsibility," and is essential for HR to embrace.

No one likes to pay for things they don’t use. If you’ve ever grappled with the fact that you’re paying for 500 channels on your monthly cable bill when you only use a few, you know what I mean. The same problem holds true when it comes to software. An average business purchases more software than is actually needed, and we’ve all had software installed that we used sparingly. It’s time to let customers pay based on what they actually use.

Some Passing Thoughts on HR as the New Year Nears | HREOnline's The Leader Board | Digital Human Resources News | Scoop.it

Posted by Kristen Frasch

On this, the last Saturday in 2012, I went hunting and pecking for a few things I might share about the HR profession — looking back on the year that will soon be history as well as anticipating the one to come.

With healthcare and the impending Affordable Care Act enactments that much closer, this list from Mercer of the top five priorities for employer-sponsored health plans in 2013 seemed a helpful one. I was especially drawn to its specific suggestions for customizing plan designs and contributions in today’s high-health-cost environment, and for making health exchanges work best for you.

Phil Ammann's insight:

The end is near (of 2012, that is)! Here are some interesting insights for the New Year...

The quick business guide to software as a service

The quick business guide to software as a service | Digital Human Resources News | Scoop.it
SaaS (Software as a Service) now offers businesses cost effective applications, but which ones should you choose for your company?

With ease of implementation and no expensive infrastructure or software to purchase, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is proving to be one of the best ways for a company to increase flexibility while managing costs.

SaaS allows business to move away from desktops and onto the cloud, where they gain the flexibility to conduct business from anywhere.

The most exciting feature of SaaS is its comprehensive possibilities; cloud-computing can be implemented to improve nearly every part of an organization.

Everything from customer service and sales to human resources and recruitment can be made more efficient through access to SaaS.

This also proves to be a new challenge for small businesses. The meteoric growth in the number of SaaS providers means a wealth of choices from small, untested startups.

With so many new players in the cloud-computing game, the decision on a provider is even more important, especially for small businesses wrestling with limited budgets and with little room to make a bad choice.

The piece from TechRadar.com outlines some of the most important factors for companies to keep in mind when choosing a cloud-computing provider.

Managing Millennials

Managing Millennials | Digital Human Resources News | Scoop.it

Managing Millennials, by Matt Straz...

I sometimes hear my fellow Gen-X managers complaining about this younger generation.

They feel that Millennials, after years of schooling and parents who doted on them, have an outsize sense of entitlement.

This is in contrast to the broken homes and harder path that many Gen-Xers experienced.

But after getting to know the Millennials, I’ve come to appreciate their unique qualities. Sure, they can be self-absorbed at times. But they also work great in groups, are open-minded and respectful of others.

Here’s how they’re different, and how I have responded as a manager:
