Apple's New Plan For Healthcare: The Doctor Will Track You Now

Apple's New Plan For Healthcare: The Doctor Will Track You Now | Digital Health & Wellbeing | Scoop.it
An Apple relay will keep your doctor's fears allayed. That's the plan, at least, behind the company's growing health care strategy: To use the Apple HealthKit platform to collect real-time data from iPhones, the soon-to-be-released Apple Watch, and other devices — and connect it to hospitals, doctors, and your electronic medical records. More [...]
Greg Smart's insight:

Apple does seem to be making big inroads into the connected health space, in particular by signing up hospitals to use its products.  If Apple becomes a de facto standard amongst healthcare professionals that will drive adoption in the wider community too.  The one issue Apple needs to overcome however is that not everyone has an iPhone. They need to be able to handle data from other sources too.

MyFitnessPal is a popular free app for tracking food intake and calories, and is widely used by…
Greg Smart's insight:

A sports clothing company buys a fitness app and a nutrition app.  This feels like a movement in the tectonic plates of the digital wellbeing sector.  As wearable devices become more mainstrean and smartwatches continue to make inroads the real action is going to lie with those who can own the user experience which makes something meaningful of all this data.  That's were apps like Endomondo can provide real value, which Under Armour must have understood.

Greg Smart's insight:

Solid evidence that fitness apps aren't exploiting the best approaches for changing people's behaviour.  Despite the intensity of the competition, the space is wide open for developers who really understand how to do this.  When there are apps which really motivate people who aren't currently active, then we'll have something of real value, both to society and for the developers.

Looks like gamification works in medication adherence. I would have thought that the two main reasons patients don't take medication wouldn't be influenced very much by a game like approach.  Generally, either patients forget to take their meds or they have no intention of doing so.  However the evidence from this article seems to suggest that patient do respond to a simple scorecard and points incentive game.

Greg Smart's insight:

A reminder that fancy kit to collect data and store it doesn't make a compelling user experience on its own.  Tom's needs, of course, are very different from an 80 year old with a chronic condition and one solution may not work for both, but this is a great articulation of where we are now with health and fitness data.

Health Data Breach At Anthem Is A Blockbuster That Could Affect 80 Million | Digital Health & Wellbeing | Scoop.it
The word blockbuster is defined as something that is very large, expensive or successful. I think it's becoming clear that this is the way wellness programmes are going.  Health Insurers will offer them as for free as part of their premiums.  This is going to herald a big round of consolidation since, not every wellness platform out there today will be able to find a health insurer willing to include it in their portfolio.
