Five new features in Windows 10 Insider Build 17074 include Quiet Hours, Edge autofilling | Digital Culture | Scoop.it
Microsot publishes its first Windows 10 Insider build of 2018, including a new Quiet Hours feature, credit-card autofilling within Edge, and more. Some Spectre and Meltdown mitigations are included, too.
nukem777's insight:
As might be expected, Microsoft’s first Insider build of 2017 is a large one. Though the majority of changes might be classified as cosmetic rather than substantive, one of the most significant areas of improvements includes ebooks, whose interface now is both more user-friendly and consistent. It’s also worth noting that, while Microsoft has reportedly rolled out mitigations for the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities in its Janaury rollup updates, this new patch also includes (possibly new) mitigations to protect Windows Insiders from both vulnerabilities.

Skype taps Whisper's Signal protocol to test encrypted calls and chats | Digital Culture | Scoop.it
Microsoft's Skype uses Whisper's Signal protocol to establish Private Conversations for secure end-to-end chats and calls between two devices.
nukem777's insight:
The EFF dinged Skype, however, on several points: for failing to provide a way to establish the identities of the contacts of the companies you were talking to, failing to provide a way to secure past communications if encryption keys were stolen, and not providing code for external review—as well as not encrypting the communications, period. It’s not clear whether any of that has or will change with the updated beta.

6 Big Things To Consider As Facebook Rethinks Its News Feed

6 Big Things To Consider As Facebook Rethinks Its News Feed | Digital Culture | Scoop.it
Back and forth discussions in the comments get priority as Facebook introduces sweeping News Feed changes.
nukem777's insight:
Is it all about 'feeling better', hmmm
"Shares have long been viewed as the thing that made posts go viral on Facebook, but now comments appear poised take their place. With this update, Facebook is prioritizing posts in the News Feed that get people talking to each other in the comments. That puts comments, or more specifically comment threads, in position to become the new share. Facebook is making this shift after recognizing that when people browsed the News Feed without interacting with content, it was making them feel bad. As the company noted in a Dec. 2017 blog post, "In general, when people spend a lot of time passively consuming information — reading but not interacting with people — they report feeling worse afterward."
