Online education trend: 20 resources for Online Learning

Online education trend: 20 resources for Online Learning | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Getting started with something new is usually a challenging and time-consuming task. Traditionally, you need to bury your nose in books. It sounds boring. However, on the Internet it takes a whole new turn. With numerous online educational programs, things begin to look more pleasant and enjoyable. You can quickly grasp the solution and remain in a positive mood. It is not surprising that online learning has doubled in popularity and has become a real trend.

You can find certified tutors for different issues: there are walkthroughs for everyone and everything from knitting a sweater to 'cooking' a fully working mobile application. You can mature as a specialist or taste a brand-new field. The great thing is that real experts are involved. Not only do they explain techniques and basics but also share their precious experience and even reveal their secrets.

Why research fails in the classroom

Why research fails in the classroom | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

Personalized learning is one of the buzzier buzz words in higher education. But it’s not a word without merit, and the motivation to bring personalized learning to campuses is getting stronger. So it’s not surprising that a profusion of products, broadly called courseware, aimed at facilitating personalized learning, has packed the higher education market. While the efficacy of personalized learning is proven, the products are often not. In a category like courseware, which is evolving rapidly and difficult to define, academic research and efficacy studies are vital to getting this proof.

Finding evidence may seem simple, after all it’s really about research and development, and other industries do this well. But in higher education the process of publishing academic research and its application in courseware product development as well as use in the classroom is disjointed. We need a better bridge between these two arenas in higher education to help faculty and instructional designers make more informed decisions around digital learning and to support companies in their quests to build better tools.

Stages of Being a Maker Learner - @JackieGerstien

Stages of Being a Maker Learner - @JackieGerstien | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

"So what is making? I’ve proposed that the heart of making is creating new and unique things. I also realize that in order for this type of making to occur, there needs to be some scaffolding so that maker learners can develop a foundation of knowledge and skills. The end result, though should be maker learners creating new things by and for themselves. The ideas in this post have been sparked by the SAMR model. I see a similar pattern or progression with maker education:"

Chris Milk uses innovative technologies to make personal, interactive, human stories. Accompanied by Joshua Roman on cello and McKenzie Stubbert on piano, Milk traces his relationship to music and art -- from the first moment he remembers putting on headphones to his current work creating breakthrough virtual reality projects. VR is the last medium for storytelling, he says, because it closes the gap between audience and storyteller. To illustrate, he brought the TED audience together in the world's largest collective VR experience. Join them and take part in this interactive talk by getting a Google Cardboard and downloading the experience at with.in/TED.

How The Brain Rewires Itself

How The Brain Rewires Itself | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

"FOR DECADES, THE PREVAILING DOGMA IN neuroscience was that the adult human brain is essentially immutable, hardwired, fixed in form and function, so that by the time we reach adulthood we are pretty much stuck with what we have. Yes, it can create (and lose) synapses, the connections between neurons that encode memories and learning. And it can suffer injury and degeneration. But this view held that if genes and development dictate that one cluster of neurons will process signals from the eye and another cluster will move the fingers of the right hand, then they'll do that and nothing else until the day you die. There was good reason for lavishly illustrated brain books to show the function, size and location of the brain's structures in permanent ink.ut research in the past few years has overthrown the dogma. In its place has come the realization that the adult brain retains impressive powers of "neuroplasticity"--the ability to change its structure and function in response to experience."

The Impact of Antonio Vivaldi’s Compositions on Developing Positive Attitudes

The Impact of Antonio Vivaldi’s Compositions on Developing Positive Attitudes | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

The present study aims at examining the influence of the compositions of Antonio Vivaldi in order to develop the ability of positive thinking of undergraduates.

Music therapy is broadly used as a form of psychological treatment for people with heart diseases and some mental illnesses such as schizophrenia by improving their mental health.

Theoretical framework of this study is based prior research on Mozart Effect done by Western Europe but participant populations were not undergraduates. In relaxation music commonly use nature as the main theme of their compositions.

Hence the research instrument consists of music composition by Antonio Vivaldi: Four Seasons prove to be more influential in this respect.

The participants were 40 undergraduates of the University of Kelaniya selected under stratified random sampling. To examine the feasibility of a randomized trial of music therapy the research was carried out through participant observation as a qualitative experimental research.

In this social survey collecting data was done with a semi structured questionnaire and behavioral and attitudinal data was gathered by separating the sampling in to two categories such as controlled and experimental groups.

5 reasons why video in eLearning is the medium of the moment

5 reasons why video in eLearning is the medium of the moment | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Let’s say you’re a rookie photographer who has just purchased your first semi-professional digital camera. You’ve read the user guide, but found it difficult to make sense of the features from the schematic diagrams. You want to know more, to see it in action - what you really want is a demonstration. Where do you go? I have my money on you visiting YouTube. YouTube is the second most visited website in the world, surpassed only by Google. This statistic confirms my hunch: People love video and given the choice to learn by watching rather than reading, most of us will go with the screen. In this article, PulseLearning discusses why video in eLearning is the medium of the moment to include in your online courses.

Research Shows Students Learn Better When They Figure Things Out On Their Own

Research Shows Students Learn Better When They Figure Things Out On Their Own | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
In some instances, research illuminates a topic and changes our existing beliefs. For example, here’s a post that challenges the myth of preferred learning styles. Other times, you might hear about a study and say, “Well, of course that’s true!” This might be one of those moments.
Last year, Dr. Karlsson Wirebring and fellow researchers published a study that supports what many educators and parents have already suspected: students learn better when they figure things out on their own, as compared to being told what to do.

This Generation Will Be Fine: Why Social Media Won’t Ruin Us

This Generation Will Be Fine: Why Social Media Won’t Ruin Us | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
When people express concern about how smartphones are damaging our young people, I laugh. This anxiety that the internet is going to ruinreal human interactions is reminiscent of parents in the 50s who were worried that Elvis shaking his hips was the devil. Let’s be very clear here. Being concerned about cultural progression “damaging us as a society” always repeats itself with the current trend and will continue to play itself out again and again and again.

Millennials are no different from Gen Y, Gen X, or any previous generation when it comes to being affected by a culture shift. In the 1940s, people had their heads in the newspaper and theirs ears to the radio. By the 60s, it was the TV. What about everyone today on their laptop and smartphones at a Starbucks? See what I’m getting at?

What’s happening with technology in our culture and society is just evolution. Technology is not undermining real human interactions. Instead, it is exposing people for who they really are. I have been asked many times, “What are we teaching the young people?” I’ve watched the behavior of 14 year old girls spending 10 minutes to take the best selfie, post it on Instagram, and then take it down when it doesn’t get enough likes. This superficial behavior tends to concern pundits who think that technology is the cause of this appearance driven, attention seeking behavior in teenagers. But the thing is, teenagers have always strived to be liked and sought the attention of their peers and potential significant others. Selfies on Instagram is the evolution of this same behavior.
