In a few weeks, people around the world will celebrate Computer Science Education Week. Millions of kids and others will participate in an Hour of Code, a global call to action to spend an hour learning the basics of coding.

Today, it’s my privilege to announce that Microsoft has released a new Minecraft tutorial for Hour of Code, called Hero’s Journey, that will be used in classrooms, at after-school programs, community centers and homes everywhere. The tutorial uses game elements loved by so many young people, and introduces a fun character called the Agent, to present computer science concepts in a fun and creative way. Learn more in a post today by Deirdre Quarnstrom, Minecraft Education general manager, and start planning your Hour of Code.

Seymour Papert on How Computers Fundamentally Change the Way Kids Learn | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
With new technologies the kid is able to explore much more knowledge by direct exploration, whether it’s information or exploration by getting into his sources, or finding other people to talk about it. I think we’re just beginning to see, and we’ll see a lot more non-textual information available through something like the Web or whatever it develops into. So there will be much more opportunity to learn before running into this barrier of the limitations of the immediate.

How Technology Is Transforming the Way We Teach and Learn

How Technology Is Transforming the Way We Teach and Learn | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Our education system is in need of reform. Most students are not taught to be self-motivated lifelong learners, nor do they come out of the school system with the skills, mindsets, and values required to survive a world of accelerating change. Most students do not graduate to feeling inspired to contribute to human progress.

The Evidence Base for How We Learn: Supporting Students’ Social, Emotional, and Academic Development

The Evidence Base for How We Learn: Supporting Students’ Social, Emotional, and Academic Development | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

"The Evidence Base for How We Learn: Supporting Students’ Social, Emotional, and Academic Development articulates the scientific consensus regarding how people learn. The research brief presents a set of consensus statements—developed and unanimously signed onto by the Commission’s Council of Distinguished Scientists—that affirm the interconnectedness of social, emotional, and academic development as central to the learning process.

"The brief draws from brain science, medicine, economics, psychology, and education research to describe why it is essential to address the social, emotional, and cognitive dimensions of learning; how these dimensions together shape students’ academic and life outcomes; and how these competencies can be taught throughout childhood, adolescence, and beyond. The evidence outlined in this brief moves the nation beyond the debate as to whether schools should attend to students’ social and emotional development, to how schools can integrate social, emotional, and academic development into their daily work."

Revolutionizing school design with Virtual Reality

Revolutionizing school design with Virtual Reality | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

Being fully immersed into a space allows both architects and non-architects to understand and experience a project’s size, scale, scope, and learning environment.

As schools are working to develop new curricula to prepare students for a future dominated by technology, architects must also prepare education clients for a new future—one where they can explore their building designs in a fully immersive way.

Using a variety of software and hardware, from off-the-shelf to fully-developed custom applications, we––as architecture firms––have the ability to import renderings and models into a virtual reality (VR) environment very quickly. And when we are committed to visualization and design exploration, this bodes well for clients and positions them at the forefront of the VR revolution.

Εκπαίδευση & κατάρτιση στην Ευρώπη: πρόκληση η ανισότητα

Εκπαίδευση & κατάρτιση στην Ευρώπη: πρόκληση η ανισότητα | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it

Via Aris P. Louvris
more...
Aris P. Louvris's curator insight, November 11, 9:52 AM

play2PREVENT Lab Study’s results published early September 2017 in the Journal of Medical Internet Research showed that PlayForward “Serious Game” was effective in improving positive attitudes about sexual health among adolescents

Following my previous post Jesse Schell On Serious Games @ Serious Play 2013, which covered PlayForward: Elm City Stories as a gold medal winner in the Healthcare/Medical category of the International Serious Play Awards, the Yale News has recently reported that “video games might soon have a place in classrooms as tools to help educate adolescents about public health issues.”

play2PREVENT Lab Study’s results published early September 2017 in the Journal of Medical Internet Research showed that PlayForward “Serious Game” was effective in improving positive attitudes about sexual health among adolescents
Richard Platt's curator insight, October 28, 12:25 PM

With the value proposition of “harnessing videogame technology to shape stronger and healthier lives”, seven years ago Lynn Fiellin MED ’96, founder and director of the play2PREVENT Lab at the Yale Center for Health & Learning Games, received funding from the National Institutes of Health to study how video games might effectively combat public health issues among New Haven youth.   Play2PREVENT’s inaugural video game was PlayForward: Elm City Stories. Yale’s p2P initiative has partnered with Schell Games and Digitalmill to develop the game for the iPad, aimed at preventing HIV infection among ethnic minority adolescents. PlayForward is a serious role-playing videogame that engages youth with a variety of challenges and choices in fictional yet realistic life situations.  Led by Fiellin, the research team recruited more than 300 students, ages 11 to 14, from afterschool and summer programs in the New Haven area for the study.  During the one-year study period, the students were assessed for a range of outcomes, including sexual health attitudes, knowledge, intention to initiate sex, and sexual activity.  The findings validate the value of the Serious Game as a tool to engage and educate teens at risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Why Mistakes Matter in Creating A Path For Learning - Mind Shift

Why Mistakes Matter in Creating A Path For Learning - Mind Shift | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
Most of us can remember a moment like this from our school years: the teacher poses a question – maybe it’s math, maybe history. You raise your hand, you give your answer with full assurance. And then? You’re shot down. You got it wrong.

We remember moments like this because they brim with some of our least favorite emotions: shame, humiliation, self-recrimination, and that gutting sense that you want to melt into the floor. Ah yes, I remember it well.

As it turns out, though, such moments are ripe with learning opportunity. Contrary to what many of us might guess, making a mistake with high confidence and then being corrected is one of the most powerful ways to absorb something and retain it.

Patient-centric ICTs based healthcare for students with learning, physical and/or sensory disabilities

Patient-centric ICTs based healthcare for students with learning, physical and/or sensory disabilities | Differentiated and ict Instruction | Scoop.it
The purpose of this review article is to explore a new paradigm on healthcare assessment and intervention practices for students with learning, physical and/or sensory disabilities. The perspective presented here is regarded as patient centric and relies on ICTs, in order to address evidence–based treatment and care, meeting every individual’s health profile, with regard to his or her needs, preferences, goals and culture. Patient-centric ICTs based approach has an impact on healthcare systems, introducing a multi-disciplinary care planning that overcomes individual, professional and organizational barriers, reduces anxiety and establishes better understanding with the student at the center.
