Research on social and conversational robots

The recent years have seen an upsurge of the area of social and conversational robotics, as shown by the special issues published in different scientific journals during 2015.

Two of them are particularly interesting:

* Beyond Industrial robotics: Social Robots Entering Public and Domestic Spheres (The Information Society, An International Journal - http://www.tandfonline.com/toc/utis20/31/3)

This special issue addresses many interesting questions: what are social robots? where do they come from? [why] do humans perceive in objects living subject capabilities? do we want robots to be social? how can different disciplines collaborate to advance in this area?

* Speech and Language for Interactive Robots (Computer Speech and Language - http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/08852308/34/1)

This special issue covers the challenges of endowing robots with conversational capabilities, including the distinction between noise and human speech, the interpretation of the direction where the speech comes from to localize the interlocutors, thesemantic interpretation of the user inputs in the context of the interaction, the calculation of optimal interaction strategies considering social affordances, and the synthesis of expressive speech.

How Your Computer Will Read You Like A Book--And Then Sell You Stuff

How Your Computer Will Read You Like A Book--And Then Sell You Stuff | [Affective] Dialog systems research | Scoop.it

Computers that understand and react to subtle cues about human emotion are coming. And when they do, advertising and marketing might be some of the early adopters.

Zoraida Callejas's insight:

Interesting debate that highlights the need of ethical critical thinking in affective computing:

What if marketing and advertising were able to instantly self-modify on the fly based on immediate nonverbal feedback?

Symbiotic Cognitive Systems

In his 1960 article on “Man-machine symbiosis”, Licklider predicted a time when “the main intellectual advances will be made by men and computers working together in intimate association”. While much of the emphasis within the AI community over the ensuing half century was placed upon tools for automation such as speech recognition or surpassing humans at challenging intellectual tasks such as chess or Jeopardy!, the last few years have witnessed a resurgent interest in symbiotic cognitive systems: collectives of humans and intelligent agents that collaborate to accomplish cognitive tasks better than either can alone.

The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers working on aspects of symbiotic cognitive computing in various application domains to synthesize a new vision and research agenda for symbiotic cognitive systems and establish a community that will have a continued existence at future AI workshops and conferences.

Are constant reminders from home and health gizmos effective in changing behaviours? Silicon Valley would like you to think so. Does nagging work?
Zoraida Callejas's insight:
The "quantified self" approach has proved to be helpful for many, however this article raises some interesting questions: are we looking for confirmation of our own experiences rather than trusting our own bodily awareness?

Zoraida Callejas's insight:

Songbirds may tell us a lot about how humans acquire language: they also have infancy and adult songs, they learn from their parents by vocal imitation, they use the same side of the brain, and they even use grammars!
