Software Hyper-productivity and Function Points

Software Hyper-productivity and Function Points | DEVOPS | Scoop.it

Jeff Sutherland uses Function Points to compare different projects, and determine productivity differences. I think that hyper-productivity is real; but using Function Points to demonstrate it is not an appropriate way to demonstrate it.

In my opinion, Function Points are a cargo cult, on the border of superstition. Function Points have the same credibility as numerology, astrology, biorhythms, anthropometry and other pseudosciences that try to gain a semblance of respectability by resorting to numbers in a manipulative and distorting manner.

Maximize Scrum with the Scrum Values: Openness (Part 2 of 5) | DEVOPS | Scoop.it
The Scrum Values are easy to remember, but it can be difficult to understand what they mean, how to apply them, and how to recognize them in teams and individuals. These values are essential to maximize the benefits of Scrum.  In this post, we see how openness is crucial when we are dealing with complexity and unpredictability.

In turn, interview each other about a personal success story related to the theme
What happened?
What made the success possible?

Mickael Ruau's insight:

The Vision

“Supporting the people who will be the flag-bearers of transforming the world of work”

Sprint 1 : Skills Growth

The 10+ Skills Growth Backlog

This is designed to be the next steps for a new Scrum Master following training course. Instead of checking their emails, prioritse which of these skills are most important to develop in their new role.

  1. Facilitation – “to enable a group of people to achieve a goal within a given constraint”
  2. Questioning – “to make you an effective servant to the team, and empower the team”
  3. Listening – “the key to communication, and key to a Scrum Master’s success”
  4. Teaching – “to help people try new things. Setting a common foundation and language”
  5. Observing – “to spot non-verbal signals and uncover the hidden truth”
  6. Motivating – “to encourage the team to want to improve”
  7. Managing Conflict – “to face conflict and encourage the team to extract positives from it”
  8. Collaborating – “pooling individuals time, skills and expertise to the service of the team, for the team”
  9. Leading – “align different people on the same journey (direction)”
  10. Influencing – “to encourage change and drive improvements through overcoming objections and maintaining a positive direction”
  11. [ENTER YOUR OWN] – “identify at least one other skill you feel the need to improve, and consider why that is important and what value it will bring your team”

Once prioritised develop your own skills growth plan as an iterative experiment, setting goals within time boxes appropriate to your own learning desire and capacity.

Executive Action Team

Executive Action Team | DEVOPS | Scoop.it
To truly reap Scrum’s benefits, the C-Suite must lead a cultural change. How? First and foremost, they need to form as a senior Scrum team, or Executive Action Team (EAT.) By operating as a small cross-functional team, executives understand how the Scrum ceremonies, roles and tools work together to enable massive increases in productivity. They also learn how collaboration, rather than command-and-control, enables innovation and problem solving. This emotional aspect is the cultural change leadership needs to learn and communicate to the rest of the enterprise.

Scrum of Scrums

Scrum of Scrums Cheat Sheet

Scrum of Scrums does:

Meet once a day after all involved sub-teams have conducted their Daily Stand-up
Mirror the team level Daily Stand-up. 15-minutes or less with a potential 15-minute follow-up conversation (often called the parking lot) to flesh out impediments and/or possible solutions. Those not involved may get back to work.
Remove impediments for individual teams if possible. If not, they raise them to the next Scrum of Scrums and so on until the impediments are removed or are raised to the EAT.
Works with the EAT to help coordinate best practices across the entire enterprise.

Scrum of Scrums does not:

Develop backlog. However, may add stories to backlogs.
Decompose Backlog
Coordinate Epics
Plan releases
Manage releases

4. Scrum and Self-Organizing Teams - Learning Agile [Book] | DEVOPS | Scoop.it

Scrum teams like to use the fable of the pig and the chicken to help understand how commitments work:

A Pig and a Chicken are walking down the road.

The Chicken says: “Hey Pig, I was thinking we should open a restaurant!”

Pig replies: “Hm, maybe; what would we call it?”

The Chicken responds: “How about ‘ham-n-eggs’?”

The Pig thinks for a moment and says: “No, thanks. I’d be committed, but you’d only be involved!”
