The Wild and Amazing World of Augmented Reality

The Wild and Amazing World of Augmented Reality | De wereld van Olafiolio... | Scoop.it
While AR isn’t difficult or expensive to use (especially when compared to 3D Printing or Maker Spaces), it does require forethought and planning. You’ll need a smartphone or tablet with a back facing camera, an augmented reality app (many free), a trigger image (you create yourself, probably for free), and an Internet connection. Then, scan the trigger image with a mobile device app and see what happens!

Susan's curator insight, March 28, 3:59 AM
Although AR isn't one of my favorite uses of technology in the classroom, I do think that it can be educational if used on occasion or as a one-off activity. Kids will certainly be amazed at what they see and you can build on that initial engagement to create real authentic tasks.

Why Even Young Students Benefit From Connecting Globally | MindShift | KQED News @KathyCassidy | De wereld van Olafiolio... | Scoop.it
Some teachers I talk to say they do not have time to connect with other classrooms because they are too busy covering their curriculum. In fact, connecting with others is not an addition to our curriculum. It is not something we do after we have finished our reading and math for the day. It is the way we do our curriculum. From practicing counting by fives or comparing similarities and differences via Skype, to writing for a worldwide audience, to making and sharing videos of social studies concepts on our blogs, we connect and invite the world to learn with us and to help us learn. Although learning from others is a key reason why I continue to connect my classroom online, there are many other reasons as well.

What does Possum Magic by Mem Fox have to do with computational thinking and digital technologies?
Possum Magic by Mem Fox is a story about a magic grandma that makes her grandson Hush become invisible.

To solve the problem they travel Australia looking for ways to make Hush visible again. Luckily the problem is solved for Hush as he consumes classically Australian foods. Strangely they need to travel to most of the capital cities to do it.

What The Screen Time Experts Do With Their Own Kids : NPR Ed : NPR

What The Screen Time Experts Do With Their Own Kids : NPR Ed : NPR | De wereld van Olafiolio... | Scoop.it
Parents today struggle to set screen time guidelines.

One big reason is a lack of role models. Grandma doesn't have any tried-and-true sayings about iPad time. This stuff is just too new.

But many experts on kids and media are also parents themselves. So when I was interviewing dozens of them for my book The Art of Screen Time, I asked them how they made screen time rules at home.

None of them held themselves up as paragons, but it was interesting to see how the priorities they focused on in their own research corresponded with the priorities they set at home.

Content Curation: A necessary skill for today’s learners - Jennifer Casa-Todd @jcasatodd | De wereld van Olafiolio... | Scoop.it
Curation is the “ability to find, to filter, to evaluate, to annotate, to choose which sources are valuable” (Valenza, Boyer , Curtis, 2014). In our information-rich age, not only is it necessary to curate, but creating content from curated resources is an excellent way to consolidate understanding and provides students with the opportunity to think critically and creatively. I have written about Content Curation and Digital Leadership before. I also include curation tools in the chapter, “The Other Social Media Tools” in Social LEADia because I believe that Storify, and curation tools like it…

21 Future Jobs the Robots Are Actually Creating - Inc.

21 Future Jobs the Robots Are Actually Creating - Inc. | De wereld van Olafiolio... | Scoop.it
According to an Oxford University analysis, close to half of all jobs will be taken over by robots in the next 25 years. No wonder the press is full of handwringing about how workers will adjust and the best way to prepare the next generation for this A.I.-filled future.

But not everyone is alarmed about the prospect of radical change in the labor market. After all, this has happened before (for instance, when mechanization replaced the vast majority of farmers) and it turned out OK. Plus, a lot of today's jobs are soul-crushingly boring and repetitive. Losing them just might be a blessing.

Among these optimists are IT service company Cognizant. In a recent report (hat tip to Business Insider for the pointer), the consultancy notes that while creative destruction has always been with us, so has reinvention. Sure, robots will take jobs away, but they'll also create new ones.

What will these new gigs look like exactly? The report imagines detailed job ads for 21 future careers that Cognizant thinks may emerge in the next 10 years.
