"It is due in great part of these co-design sessions that we wrapped up our time in the DRC with a much clearer vision of the system we are designing. Because we were able to share very early paper and role playing prototypes with the women and get their feedback, we return to San Francisco with a strong direction in terms of how to provide health, water, and nutrition services to communities in Eastern Congo. We look forward to reengaging these women when the team returns for prototyping in a few weeks. "

Design Thinking Is A Failed Experiment. So What's Next?

Design Thinking Is A Failed Experiment. So What's Next? | Design Service Action | Scoop.it

" Companies absorbed the process of Design Thinking all to well, turning it into a linear, gated, by-the-book methodology that delivered, at best, incremental change and innovation. Call it N+1 innovation."

"Rich countries’ welfare states were designed for a more homogeneous and deferential society in which most people accepted that the men in the ministry knew best. Now, the public rightly expect better, but governments constantly fail to live up to their demands. Since public agencies have generated so few good ideas of their own, a bit of outside help would appear to be worth trying."

Social Entrepreneurship Is Bringing Purpose To Higher Education

Social Entrepreneurship Is Bringing Purpose To Higher Education | Design Service Action | Scoop.it
Higher education in the United States is facing a crisis.

Surrounded by college students, faculty, administrators, and innovators at the 2013 Ashoka U Exchange, one thing became clear to me: teaching social entrepreneurship is a key part of solving this problem. It makes sense. Entrepreneurs are defined by their sense of drive and determination, their willingness to fail and then try again, and their vision for applying their learning in productive ways. Those also happen to be the characteristics of great learners.

Dieter Rams: If I Could Do It Again, "I Would Not Want To Be A Designer"

Dieter Rams: If I Could Do It Again, "I Would Not Want To Be A Designer" | Design Service Action | Scoop.it

"What I am especially bothered by today is that, particularly in the media, design is being used as a 'lifestyle asset.' I’m bothered by the arbitrariness and the thoughtlessness with which many things are produced and brought to the market. There are so many unnecessary things we produce, not only in the sector of consumer goods, but also in architecture, in advertising. We have too many unnecessary things everywhere. And I would even go as far as to describe this as inhumane. That is the situation today. But actually, it has always been a problem."

Is the global aid community ready to ‘design for impact’? | Design Service Action | Scoop.it

“Design is about solving problems to improve lives, which is what international development is about on some levels. We have common goals. It’s a very natural marriage,” said Fleming of Catapult. “Every time we go to D.C., more and more people at the World Bank and USAID want new ways of looking at old problems, and that’s what design is good at: reframing problems.”
