Network - DESIS Lab (Politecnico di Milano, It) | Design research programmes | Scoop.it

DESIS (Design for Social Innovation towards Sustainability) is a network of design labs, based in design schools and design-oriented universities, actively involved in promoting and supporting sustainable change.

Partnerships

DESIS Network collaborates with other networks whose focus (such as social innovation, quality of everyday life, design for sustainability, and design school coordination) is complementary to their own. In this spirit, to date, formal agreements have been established with: Social Innovation Exchange (SIX), Sustainable Everyday Project (SEP), Learning Network on Sustainability (LeNS), Partnership for Education and Research about Responsible Living (PERL)and International Association of Universities and Colleges of Design, Art and Media (CUMULUS).

DESIS also establishes special partnerships with private companies, non-profit organizations, foundations and government agencies that share similar views and are willing to co-develop open projects on topics and areas of common interest.

DESIS is endorsed by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Lab - Design Interactions Research - RCA (London, UK) | Design research programmes | Scoop.it

Our research explores new ways design can make technology more meaningful and relevant to our lives, both now, and in the future, by thinking not only about new applications but implications as well.

It focusses on exploring interactions between people, science and technology on many different levels. We’re concerned not only with the expressive, functional and communicative possibilities of new technologies but also with the social, cultural and ethical consequences of living within an increasingly technologically mediated society.

University of the Arts Berlin

The „Design Research Lab" group started in 2005 as a part of the Deutsche Telekom Laboratories and Technical University Berlin. Currently, a team of 9 scientific researchers is working on interdisciplinary design research projects. From the start, the main goal was to mediate the gap between technological innovations and real needs of people in their everyday living environment. Diverse human needs and requirements are addressed: of the elderly and teenagers, families and singles, people with different abilities and disabilities.

Main questions are:

How would we like to communicate and interact in the future?

What kind of design methods serve us in research and development?

How can people be integrated into research and development as experts of their everyday life?

Which forms of technological development and innovations can be utilized to improve social, environmental and economic sustainability?

Recherches créatives et recherches théoriques, les deux faces d'un même projet, un design prospectif.

Par nature, le design est une recherche. La pratique des designers les projette vers ce qui n'existe pas encore.

Research Project of the Year 2012

Dr Adrian Bowyer, recently retired from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, together with his research team have been shortlisted for their project RepRap.

Rep-rap is a desktop 3D printer capable of printing plastic objects. Instead of printing on paper, RepRap creates three-dimensional plastic replicas of designs fed into a computer. The machine has already made objects ranging from a child’s sandals to watertight flasks and can even produce new versions of itself.

Adrian said: “Our aim was to create and give away a machine that makes useful stuff, thus enabling its owner to easily and cheaply make another one for someone else.

While the project began with a simple machine known as the Darwin RepRap, Adrian and his international team have since created new models including travel-sized and faster-to-build versions.

The project has led to five companies being created and an estimated 2,500 RepRap machines being used across the world.

Design Research - (Aalto University - Finland)

The main streams of research at the Department of Design are user centred design, cultural design, and sustainable design research.

User centred design includes a range of research interests dealing with stakeholders’ involvement in design and consumption of design artefacts. The approaches range from usability, interaction design, user experience, accessibility, design-for-all, participatory design, co-design and service design to transformation design.

Cultural design research is a covering umbrella for humanistic research approaches in design. These include design history, research on design professions and values, cross-cultural connections in design, design in societal discourses and the interface between design and art practices and research.

An emerging area of research competence at the department is design and sustainability. The research interests include sustainable use of materials, the impact of design on sustainable consumption and the processes and approaches supporting the creation of sustainable product service systems.

http://dschool.stanford.edu/our-point-of-view/

At the d.school, we learn by doing. We don’t just ask our students to solve a problem, we ask them to define what the problem is. Students start in the field, where they develop empathy for people they design for, uncovering real human needs they want to address. They then iterate to develop an unexpected range of possible solutions, and create rough prototypes to take back out into the field and test with real people. Our bias is toward action, followed by reflection on personal discoveries about process. Experience is measured by iteration: students run through as many cycles as they possibly can on any project. Each cycle brings stronger insights and more unexpected solutions.
