Moscow Design Museum | Packaging design. Made in Russia

Moscow Design Museum | Packaging design. Made in Russia | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Moscow | 19.04.2013 - 25.06.2013

"For the first time in Russia, this retrospective will present the centuries-long history and tradition of Russian packaging, starting from original folksy solutions to contemporary, world-renowned examples of design. Curators of the exhibition examine the history of Russian graphic and industrial design by looking at artifacts of national material culture. A timeline of artistic styles and movements forms the basis of the exposition. These include eclecticism and neo-Russian style, art nouveau, Russian avant-garde and constructivism, Stalin’s empire style and socialist realism, mid-century modernism, 1980’s eclecticism, computerized experiments of the 1990’s and contemporary trends.

(...)

Visitors to the exhibition will not only be introduced to the process of how package design is created but will also see original hand-made sketches and models. Besides food packaging, perfume and medical products the exhibition will include interesting examples of packaging for household items, textiles and toys."

Museu del Disseny de Barcelona | Puig i Cadafalch, as seen by Ramon Manent

Museu del Disseny de Barcelona | Puig i Cadafalch, as seen by Ramon Manent | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Barcelona | 23.11.2017 - 28.01.2018
"Puig i Cadafalch Year celebrates the 150th anniversary of Josep Puig i Cadafalch’s birth and the centenary of his accession to the presidency of Catalonia through the Mancomunitat government. The Museu del Disseny de Barcelona (Barcelona Design Museum) joins in with this cultural and civic celebration through the present exhibition. In it, the Ramon Manent i Rodon, a photographer specialising in images of art and, like Josep Puig i Cadafalch himself, from the town of Mataró, suggests his own, personal view of the architect’s works. Through this unusual gaze, then, Manent’s camera reveals to us some of Puig i Cadafalch’s most outstanding works."

Denver Art Museum | Unseated. Contemporary chairs reimagined

Denver Art Museum | Unseated. Contemporary chairs reimagined | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
Denver | Through 19.11.2017
"Innovative and unexpected―these works reveal the vast range of materials and processes utilized by contemporary designers as they challenge our notions of what design can be through the enduring form of the chair. The methods employed by these designers demonstrate a juxtaposition of handcraftsmanship and digital production, from unconventional and spontaneous processes (melting, wrapping, and molding), to sculpting with math and technology. Some utilize longstanding production methods, while others push the limits of existing technologies or build their own specialized tools."

The Hague | 14.10.2017 - 04.03.2018

"Couturier Paul Poiret was among the greatest innovators in early 20th-century fashion. But his influence was not limited to fashion; he aspired to create ‘total works of art’ and surrounded himself with artists, designers and architects. His world included figures like Raoul Dufy and Man Ray and the work of Brancusi, Robert Delaunay and Kees van Dongen. He is rightly regarded as the founding father of Art Deco.Art Deco – Paris will be an interdisciplinary presentation, combining art, fashion, decorative art, photography, music and film, and bringing to life the decadence and opulence of the Art Deco period, which still holds great appeal today."

Queens Museum | Never built New York | design exhibitions | Scoop.it
New York | 17.09.2017 - 18.02.2018
"Hidden behind New York City’s iconic skyscrapers, sprawling subway system and world famous public parks is the ghost of the city that could have been – a parallel metropolis that can reveal the city’s goals, strengths and challenges. Never Built New York [...] invites visitors to discover the New York City that might have been through original prints, drawings, models, installations, and animations. While it may be impossible to re-imagine New York, Never Built explores a city where you could catch a football game in Manhattan, travel via a floating airport, and live in an apartment also acting as a bridge support."

"Travel to extreme environments is a relatively modern phenomenon. Expeditions to the North and South poles, the highest mountain peaks, the depths of the ocean, and outer space have been widely covered in the press for more than a century. But it was not until the 1960s that these endeavors began to influence fashion. Expedition: Fashion from the Extreme is the first major exhibition to examine this fascinating subject."

Vienna | 21.06.2017 - 31.07.2017

"How can we repair the future? And how can architecture and urbanism contribute to this? For the exemplary trial run of a Care + Repair urbanism the Architekturzentrum Wien is initiating a public workspace with a closeness to nature on the former railway territory of the impressive Nordbahnhof grounds, one of the largest inner-city development zones in Vienna. This is the gathering point for six international architectural teams who are developing prototypes for Care + Repair in tandem with local initiatives and experts. How can different urban knowledge effectively come together in neighbourhood networks, new uses of community spaces, the re-use of existing material resources, and the care for nature in the city? An on-site exhibition shows projects by the invited teams, showing how Care + Repair architecture works with the existing city and takes it into the future."

"Breathing Colour blurs the boundaries between art and design. Combining intriguing shapes with extensive research; this exhibition questions our preconceptions of colour and embraces its imperfection and experimentation.
The exhibition is divided into separate spaces that simulate daylight conditions at specific times of the day – morning, noon and evening. These three phases explore the impact of changing daylight on our perception of colour. Each installation includes a series of three-dimensional objects as well as textiles, some of which are hand-woven while others are produced on industrial looms."

Spielzeug Welten Museum | Perfume flacons - vessels for seductive fragances | design exhibitions | Scoop.it

Basel | 21.10.2017 - 08.04.2018

"People’s desire to be able to carry a fragrance with them was widespread in societies as early as the ancient Egyptians. Since a fragrance was only effective when you always had it at your disposal, suitable storage containers were a must. Flacons were made with the aim of lending a unique, personal touch to every perfume. Today, these design objects are recognized as works of art. Designs have always been subject to the zeitgeist of each period. Flacons are among the most important marketing tools in the beauty industry. Over 500 flacons from the past 5,000 years can be seen in this special exhibition. The diversity of forms is staggering, and as far as materials go, the sky is the limit: gold, silver, glass, porcelain, enamel, tortoiseshell, pearls, and precious stones."

Now, like many postindustrial cities, Detroit is coping with a changed urban density and image that has generated much thinking in urban planning."

On the one hand, social changes are influencing people’s living needs, while on the other an ever-increasing volume of new materials with enormous potential are being marketed, which have their origins in the automotive industry, medicine, and the bio-sciences."

Weil am Rhein | 14.07.2017 – 24.09.2017
"This year he would have celebrated his 100th birthday: the Austro-Italian designer Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007), one of the most influential and unconventional figures in twentieth-century design. He gained renown with his designs for the office equipment manufacturer Olivetti, for his poetic, minimalist sculptural objects, and as the leading figure of the Memphis design collective in the 1980s. Over the course of his long career, Sottsass moved between disciplines, leaving behind a fascinating oeuvre that is represented by many objects in the collection of the Vitra Design Museum. The Vitra Schaudepot exhibition presents an overview of approximately 30 of his furniture designs, consumer products, photographs and writings. It pays tribute to an extraordinary designer who did not regard form and function as constraints, but rather viewed design as an opportunity to explore the nature of human existence."
