cup of salt water vs. cup of fresh water

 

 

Desalination is the process of taking the salt out of water. This new method will allow us to convert salt water into fresh water. Fresh water makes up only 3% of the total water on earth, the other 97% is salt water. We are polluting and consuming our fresh water at a high rate and could deplete it completely. If this were to happen the only water we would have left is salt water.

 

If we do not start to conserve our fresh water desalination would be the only way to go. This solution is expensive but energy efficient and it has a much larger water source to work with. At the rate fresh water is being used humans are going to have to convert oceans and seas into fresh water. Desalination is a  very useful process, but if we start to use our fresh water more carefully, we will not have to rely on this process.

Some 80,000 people in the Navajo Nation in Arizona may soon have access to much-needed clean water after 20 years of severe drought in the region.

 

While Arizona’s biggest aquifer sits directly under their land, it is nearly 400 feet from the surface and not suitable for drinking or domestic use. Because it is full of salt and polluted with arsenic and uranium, Navajo families must drive hundreds of miles away to get potable water.

 

“It is an expensive and time-consuming journey that has become part of the Navajo way of life,” said Kevin Black, a Native American affairs specialist for the Bureau of Reclamation. Thankfully, scientists at the University of Arizona, along with the help of the Bureau, have come up with a solution that will work by using the power of the sun ...

Summary: Scientists at the Massachusetts Institue of Technology (MIT) have believed to have come up with a new form of desalinination, or the removal of salt from sea water. These engineers have develpoed a "graphene-based desalination system that uses a very very thin layer of graphene with tiny holes for only the water to pass through. The idea is that the salt is left behind leaving the water on the other side virtually filtered. These scientists hope to impliment this cheap form of desalination to countries in desperate need of fresh water as soon as possible.

Thirsty? How 'bout a cool, refreshing cup of seawater?

 

            Salt water is detrimental to humans and cannot be consumed.  However, salt water can be transformed into freshwater through the desalination process.  This process is especially crucial in parts of the world that have no access to fresh water for such things as drinking water or irrigation of crops.  Desalination is not a new process by any means, as it is believed to have been one of the world’s first water treatment solutions.  However this process has been altered and innovated to make it easier and cheaper to do.

            Every bit of fresh water does have a little salt (about 1,000 parts per million).  Ocean water contains about 35,000 parts per million of salt and is considered to be highly saline water.  With over 97% of water on the planet being salt water, it is a very abundant resource.  One way the desalination process works is that salt water is heated and the water vapor that contains no salt is cooled and condenses and becomes the product fresh water.  This exact process is seen in a slower form with the hydrologic cycle in nature.

            There were around 12,500 desalination plants in 120 countries in 2002.  These desalination plants create around 14 million m3/day of freshwater which amounts to less than 1% of the total usage in the world.  Almost 70% of desalinated water is used in the Middle East in countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.  The United States uses about 6.5% of the total use of desalinated water and is mainly located in Florida and California.

Water is undeniably important to our physical survival, and energy is the main physical ingredient in our development of modern society. Shortages in either could have major impacts.

Recently, Government has implimented a new piece of legislation that would create a new desalination plant on the west coast of the United States. This plant would be built near downtown San Francisco and is hoped to be finished by the year 2020.

This plant would not only be home to hundreds of new jobs to aid in the struggling economy on the west coast, but it would also create around fifteen million gallons of water per DAY! The price is currently marked at about one billion dollars total to create the plant and every gallon will run at $4.80 per hundred cubic feet (hcf)
