The Modern Beauty of 19th-Century Data Visualizations - CityLab

The Modern Beauty of 19th-Century Data Visualizations - CityLab | DDJ Collection | Scoop.it
These high-quality poster reproductions from an 1870s statistical atlas are at once gorgeously designed and utterly antiquated.
Beth Carpenter's insight:

What can we learn from old documents from the 1870s? Apparently, data visualization was alive and well, and with painstaking, artful detail. The "info-nerds" at Vintage Visualizations have "reproduced a number of the LOC's Civil War-era data visualizations in high-quality poster prints," and the results are fascinating. We now have access to impressive works of data visualization that reveal census data, maps, fiscal charts, and municipal net debt, each using different forms of graphs that are colorful. It's incredible that data visualization was so thoughtfully created before the invention of computers.

Visual Storytelling: Why Data Visualization is a Content Marketing Fairytale - Search Engine Journal

Visual Storytelling: Why Data Visualization is a Content Marketing Fairytale - Search Engine Journal | DDJ Collection | Scoop.it
To make your Content Marketing work stand out you need to combine visual elements through storytelling. Read to learn more on data visualization.
Beth Carpenter's insight:

Data visualization holds a future in every market, and this article explains why. We love to consume data; we love to consume knowledge with visual representations; we love stories. These are the three elements combined in the bonding between data visualization and data-driven journalism. However, it's important to know how to EFFECTIVELY be a visual story teller. One must actually comprehend the data they are studying; one must know how to illustrate this data in a way that will capture the audience's short attention span; one must study other uses of the marriage of these ideas, and find what worked and what didn't.

How quickly Ebola spreads compared to other diseases

How quickly Ebola spreads compared to other diseases | DDJ Collection | Scoop.it
Compared to other infectious diseases, Ebola spreads slowly and to relatively few people. But it is extremely deadly: Thousands have been killed this year in West Africa, and more are falling ill every day.
Beth Carpenter's insight:

Journalists Bonnie Berkowitz and Lazaro Gamio use data visualization to compare the Ebola virus with other infectious diseases when spread from one person to 100 unvaccinated people. For the past month, Ebola has been a headlining topic, causing mass fear, which, in turn, causes mass research; everyone wants to know what it is and how to NOT "catch" it. This article is reassuring in the fact that it illustrates that Ebola is not spread nearly quickly as say, the chicken pox or whooping cough. However, it is also shown to be the most deadliest. This interactive display allows the reader to easily and quickly grasp the significance of the disease when compared to others, while not creating unnecessary panic. It is a clean and interesting use of data visualization.

'Grillz' Art Installation Uses Algorithmic Data to Visualize Hip-Hop Lyrics - PSFK

'Grillz' Art Installation Uses Algorithmic Data to Visualize Hip-Hop Lyrics - PSFK | DDJ Collection | Scoop.it
Artist creates grills representing the music genre's lyrical patterns
Beth Carpenter's insight:

Artist Roopa Vasudevan has created a literal data visualization display to "visualize" hip hop lyrics. The interactive installment uses an algorithm that "analyzes certain keywords to produce geometric shapes for hip-hop anthem." Vasudevan's algorithm incorporates shared keywords from the lyrics of rap songs by famous hip hop artists (such as Puff Daddy, Jay-Z, and Rick Ross). Using PyGenius to generate data from these songs, Vasudevan creates a "lyrical scoring system" to rate the distance of these keywords, from one extreme to the next. A 3-D printer is then used "to translate the lyrical algorithms into physical form," and Vasudevan creates grills, a commonplace accessory worn by hip hop artists. Vasudevan has woven technology, data, math, and data visualization to create a brand new piece of modern art.

Traffic Stops II: Data show racial disparity, but police say that's never been their intent

Traffic Stops II: Data show racial disparity, but police say that's never been their intent | DDJ Collection | Scoop.it
Black drivers who live in Champaign or Urbana are more likely to be stopped for traffic violations than white drivers. Police in both cities say that's not because of race.
Beth Carpenter's insight:

Journalist Michael Howie has collected data and assessed it to come to the conclusion that black drivers are more likely to be pulled over than white drivers in Champaign or Urbana. Howie. Under state law, a task force has been formed the data collected. Pete Resnick, chairman of the task force, discusses the force's future findings: "In the end, the intent of the officer might not be the most important thing," Resnick said. "The effect of a disparity might be the most important thing." These findings could have serious implications for this area of the country, and is another instance of data provoking discussion.
